Constantia Glen’s 2023 TWO is a beautifully poised Cape white in the classic Bordeaux mould, bringing Sauvignon Blanc’s citrus snap together with Sémillon’s texture and quiet breadth. It opens with lime, grapefruit, green fig and white blossom, followed by yellow fruit, saline freshness and a gentle creamy note from time on lees.

On the palate, it is bright, layered and mouth-coating, with zesty acidity cutting through the wine’s richer, textured centre. The Sauvignon Blanc gives focus and lift, while the Sémillon adds weight, floral detail and a subtle waxy polish. This is not a simple fresh white. It has concentration, length and the structure to develop beautifully in bottle.

Constantia Glen is one of the standout modern estates in South Africa’s historic Constantia Valley, the country’s oldest wine-producing region. The property sits just below Constantia Nek, moments from Cape Town, with vineyards set between Table Mountain and the Constantiaberg. Its altitude, maritime breezes and slow-ripening conditions make it an exceptional site for elegant white blends and finely structured Bordeaux-style reds.

The Waibel family has owned the 60-hectare farm since 1960, but the modern wine story began after vineyards were planted in 2000 and 2001. Today, only 29 hectares are under vine, keeping production focused and boutique in scale. Cellar master Justin van Wyk has played a major role in the estate’s rise, helping build a reputation for precision, restraint and serious ageing potential. The numbered range is brilliantly clear: TWO for the white blend, THREE for the Merlot-led red, and FIVE for the flagship five-variety Bordeaux blend. The 2023 TWO is a blend of 64% Sauvignon Blanc and 36% Sémillon, selected from the best vineyard blocks on the Constantia Glen estate. The 2023 season was excellent for white varieties, with a cold winter, warmer spring, reduced wind during the growing season and slow, even ripening. Sauvignon Blanc picking began on 14 February, two weeks earlier than the previous year, and the white harvest concluded on 3 March.

The grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness. Sémillon was whole-bunch pressed, while the Sauvignon Blanc was destemmed, crushed and given 6 to 18 hours of skin contact before pressing. The wine was barrel-fermented and matured on the lees for 12 months in 600-litre demi-muids, with 10% new oak and the remainder ranging from second to eighth fill.

The ageing regime included neutral French oak, 15% Austrian oak, 10% French acacia and 15% clay amphora, building depth and texture while preserving brightness. The finished wine has 14% alcohol, 1.8 g/l residual sugar, 6.2 g/l total acidity and a pH of 3.23, giving it richness, freshness and the structure to age for 10 to 15 years under good conditions.
