2023 Treeton Chardonnay, Nocturne

Margaret River, Australia

Flint Current

White peach, nectarine and lemon rise from the glass, joined by spring blossom, toasted nuts and a fine thread of struck flint. A refreshing saline note runs beneath the fruit, giving this Margaret River Chardonnay a cool, precise and quietly complex personality.

Taut and energetic on the palate, with citrus and stone fruit carried by bright, sherbet-like acidity. Barrel fermentation and time on the lees bring a smooth, satiny texture, while delicate phenolic grip provides shape and persistence. The finish is long, mineral and mouth-wateringly saline, with richness held firmly in check by freshness.

For when: A serious Chardonnay deserves time, a large glass and your full attention.

Pairs with: Grilled lobster, roast chicken, seared scallops, smoked haddock, crab linguine, mushroom risotto or Comté.

Treeton is the only landlocked sub-region of Margaret River. Its warm days, cool nights and deep sandy soils produce Chardonnay with naturally bright acidity and impressive finesse. This wine draws on two low-yielding vineyards, capturing Treeton’s distinctive combination of white stone fruit, flinty tension and freshness.

Nocturne is the personal Margaret River project of Julian Langworthy, one of Australia’s most highly regarded contemporary winemakers. Born and raised in the region, Julian has spent more than two decades developing his craft across Australia, France and Canada. His achievements include the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy and being named Winemaker of the Year in the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion.

What began as a small side project in 2010 has developed into a tightly focused collection of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from exceptional sites across Treeton, Wallcliffe, Wilyabrup and Yallingup. Production remains deliberately small, and the wines are highly sought after, often selling out shortly after release.

Julian describes his approach as “careful neglection”. Indigenous yeasts, minimal handling and no fining allow the vineyard and vintage to shape each wine, while precise fruit selection keeps the results polished and controlled. The range combines sub-regional wines with limited single-vineyard releases, exploring the subtle differences within Margaret River rather than presenting one broad regional style. Nocturne has earned trust through clarity, individuality and an uncompromising commitment to exceptional fruit.

The 2023 Treeton Chardonnay is made from 100% Chardonnay sourced from two low-yielding, cane-pruned vineyards in Treeton. The grapes were harvested entirely by hand between 27 February and 3 March.

Whole bunches were pressed directly into a combination of new, one-year-old and two-year-old French oak puncheons, with a small number of barriques also used. The juice was neither settled nor fined before spontaneous fermentation began with indigenous yeasts three days after pressing. Fermentation continued for approximately four weeks.

The wine remained on its gross lees in barrel without sulphur additions until August 2023, building texture and complexity. It was removed from barrel in November, allowed to settle, then filtered and bottled.

Warm days, cool nights and slow, even ripening defined the excellent 2023 vintage. Moderate yields and an absence of disease pressure produced fruit with purity, concentration and vibrant natural acidity.

Alcohol: 13%. Total acidity: 7.75g/L. pH: 3.08. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
