2023 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, La Crema

Sonoma Coast, California, United States

Coastal Silk

Elegant, juicy and beautifully polished, the 2023 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay shows La Crema’s more refined side. Meyer lemon, pear and white flowers lead the nose, supported by subtle oak and a gentle creamy note. The palate is fleshy and vibrant, with crisp apple, golden peach and pineapple, plus a richer hint of graham cracker pie crust that gives the wine depth without weighing it down. Bright acidity drives the finish, leaving a Chardonnay that feels generous, balanced and quietly sophisticated.

For when: the table is set properly, but the mood is still relaxed.
Pairs with: lobster rolls, roast chicken, crab cakes, creamy risotto or buttery white fish.
If this wine were a place: a misty Sonoma morning turning slowly into golden afternoon light.

La Crema’s Sonoma Coast Chardonnay comes from one of California’s great cool-climate regions, where coastal fog, Pacific breezes, and a long ripening season help preserve freshness while building flavour. The result is a Chardonnay with ripe fruit and creamy texture.

La Crema was founded in 1979 with its original name: La Crema Viñera, which translates as ‘best of the vine’. At this time, the Russian River Valley had yet to establish itself as one of California’s most significant regions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The first few vintages at La Crema were devoted to understanding the intricacies of cold-climate viticulture and winemaking. This family-owned winery continues to focus exclusively on cool-climate appellations. From its original home in the Russian River Valley, over the years, it has expanded to Monterey and Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The winemaking team is continually exploring these special regions, seeking areas where ocean winds and fog allow grapes to ripen slowly on the vine, developing complex flavours and aromas. Head winemaker Craig McAllister adds a personal touch, combining Burgundian winemaking techniques with contemporary Californian flair. This combination of meticulous site selection and boutique winemaking techniques produces uniquely expressive wines, full of finesse and elegance.

The hand-harvested fruit was gently pressed, cool settled for 24 hours before being racked to barrel for fermentation with selected yeasts. The wine was matured on its lees for approximately six months, with lees stirring to impart texture and complexity in oak barrels comprising 75% French oak (14% new) and 21% American oak (3% new).
