2023 Riesling Spitzer Federspiel, Weingut Johann Donabaum
Wachau, Austria
The Terraced Orchard
Lively, fragrant and wonderfully clear-cut, Spitzer Federspiel opens with white peach and apricot, followed by citrus zest and delicate blossom. A stony mineral character gives the ripe fruit definition, keeping the aromas fresh and finely drawn. There is an inviting generosity to the orchard fruit, balanced by the cool precision that makes Wachau Riesling so distinctive.
Dry and medium-bodied, the palate brings juicy stone fruit together with brisk acidity and a gently rounded texture. A subtle grip adds shape, while citrus freshness carries the wine into a clean, persistent finish. It is immediately appealing as an aperitif and especially rewarding alongside fish, shellfish and lighter dishes. Enjoy it young for its vivid fruit, or allow a few years in bottle for greater complexity.
For when: The first glass should feel like opening the windows on a bright spring morning.
Pairs with: Grilled trout with lemon butter, steamed sea bass with ginger, scallop ceviche, prawn and fennel linguine, chicken schnitzel or asparagus with hollandaise.
Spitzer refers to Spitz, the village at the western end of the Wachau where steep vineyards extend into the Spitzer Graben. Federspiel identifies the region’s dry, medium-bodied style, prized for its balance of flavour and freshness. The name comes from the feathered lure used in falconry, a fitting image for a wine with such lift and poise.
