2023 Primitivo di Manduria 'Talo', San Marzano

Salento, Puglia, Italy

San Marzano’s 2023 Talò Primitivo di Manduria is Puglia turned up: rich, ripe, smooth and full of southern Italian warmth. Deep ruby in the glass, it opens with black cherry, plum, blackberry, sweet spice, cocoa, vanilla and a little tobacco curl from time in oak.

On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, with plush dark fruit, soft tannins and a warming, generous finish. This is exactly why Primitivo has become such a crowd-pleaser: it gives you the ripeness and comfort of a big red, but with enough freshness and savoury spice to keep it from feeling heavy. A superb bottle for roasts, rich pasta, grilled meat or anyone who likes their reds bold, smooth and deliciously easy to love.

For when
Dinner needs a red with shoulders, charm and a little Italian swagger.

Pairs with
Roast lamb, beef ragu, lasagne, grilled sausages, barbecue ribs, venison, rich tomato pasta, aubergine parmigiana, hard cheeses or mushroom pizza.

San Marzano sits in the heart of Primitivo di Manduria, in Puglia’s sun-baked Salento, where warm days, dry conditions and rocky clay soils are perfectly suited to powerful, generous reds. Talò is a tribute to the local growers whose families have cared for these vineyards for generations. Full, ripe and polished, it captures the modern appeal of Primitivo: plush fruit, spice, softness and serious feel-good energy.

San Marzano is one of the defining names of modern Puglian wine. Founded in 1962 by 19 growers in the small town of San Marzano di San Giuseppe, the winery sits in the heart of Primitivo di Manduria, long before the grape became an international favourite. What began as a small cooperative has grown into one of southern Italy’s most recognisable producers, while still keeping its roots firmly in the local farming community.

The estate’s strength lies in its relationship with growers, many of whom work small family plots across Salento. This gives San Marzano access to a wide range of vineyard sites, from old bush vines to carefully managed modern plantings. The house style is generous, polished and unmistakably Puglian, with ripe fruit, warmth and texture balanced by clean winemaking and reliable freshness.

Talò sits in the sweet spot of the range: serious enough to show Manduria’s depth and richness, but approachable enough to open with confidence any night of the week.

The 2023 Talò Primitivo di Manduria is made from 100% Primitivo grown in the San Marzano area of Salento, Puglia. The vineyards sit at around 100 metres above sea level, in a warm, dry climate with high average temperatures and medium-low rainfall. The soils are clayey, shallow and full of stones, naturally limiting vine vigour and helping concentrate flavour.

The vines are trained on espalier systems at a density of around 5,000 vines per hectare. Harvest takes place in mid-September, when Primitivo reaches its deep colour, ripe fruit and soft tannin profile. In the cellar, the grapes undergo temperature-controlled maceration and alcoholic fermentation for around ten days using selected yeasts.

The wine is then aged for six months in French and American oak barrels, adding notes of vanilla, cocoa and sweet spice to Primitivo’s natural plum and cherry richness. The finished wine is 14% alcohol, full-bodied and structured, but softened by the natural warmth and velvety texture that make Primitivo di Manduria so immediately appealing.
