2023 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir, Masút

Mendocino County, California, United States

Eagle Silk

Masút’s 2023 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir is Mendocino with polish, power and a very convincing silk shirt. Grown in the rugged Eagle Peak AVA, it opens with pomegranate, raspberry, Bing cherry and dark berry fruit, layered with cardamom, vanilla, anise, black tea and a gentle thread of spice. It is unmistakably Californian in generosity, but there is mountain freshness and shape beneath the gloss.

On the palate, it is plush, supple and bright, with red and black fruit carried by lively acidity and fine, lip-smacking tannins. The fruit is ripe and immediate, but the finish has enough savoury spice, tea leaf and oak polish to keep it serious. This is Pinot for anyone who wants elegance with a little California muscle.

For when
A roast dinner needs something silky, generous and quietly impressive.

Pairs with
Roast duck, pork belly, glazed ham, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto, roast chicken, venison, turkey, beetroot dishes or soft cheeses.

Masút is the personal project of third-generation Mendocino vintners Ben and Jake Fetzer, grandsons of Barney and Kathleen Fetzer of Fetzer Vineyards. Their father, Robert “Bobby” Fetzer, saw the potential of this wild, mountainous ranch for serious Pinot Noir, and the brothers have carried that vision forward with estate-grown wines rooted in Eagle Peak’s cool winds, rugged terrain and dark, rich earth. The result is a Pinot Noir with family history, place and proper Californian confidence.

Masút Vineyard & Winery is a boutique, family-run estate nestled in the cool, rugged hills of Mendocino County, California. Founded in 2009 by Ben and Jake Fetzer, third-generation vintners from the iconic Fetzer winemaking family, Masút represents a return to roots – a focused, hands-on approach to crafting expressive, site-driven wines from their own land.

The estate is located in the Eagle Peak AVA, a remote and elevated region where coastal breezes and a long growing season produce wines of freshness, structure, and balance. Sitting at elevations ranging from 900 to 1,800 feet, the Masút vineyard is planted primarily to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, varieties that thrive in the area’s cool climate, volcanic soils, and sustainable farming practices.

Masút is deeply committed to organic viticulture, with a focus on small-lot winemaking and minimal intervention. The result is a portfolio of wines that reflects both the uniqueness of the site and the dedication of the family behind them. With limited production and an emphasis on quality over quantity, Masút has earned a strong following among wine lovers who appreciate purity, precision, and authenticity in their glass.

Today, Masút stands as a testament to the Fetzer family’s enduring legacy, honouring tradition while forging a distinctive path in California’s next-generation winemaking scene.

The 2023 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir comes from Masút’s organically farmed estate vineyard in the Eagle Peak Mendocino County AVA. The ranch includes two main vineyard zones: lower slopes with gravelly clay soils formed from weathered sedimentary rock, and higher ridge sites with deeper red soils from weathered sandstone. Eagle Peak is cooler and windier than nearby Redwood Valley and Ukiah Valley, giving Pinot Noir the freshness it needs alongside Mendocino ripeness.

The fruit is hand-harvested in the cool morning and brought quickly to the winery, where individual vineyard blocks are handled separately. Masút’s approach is small-lot and estate-focused, with Pinot Noir aged in French oak to build texture and spice without overwhelming the fruit. For the 2023 release, the wine was aged for 11 months in French oak, giving the wine its plush texture, vanilla and anise detail, and supple finish. The style is generous but carefully shaped: ripe red and dark fruit, bright acidity, polished tannin and a distinctly mountain-grown edge.
