2023 Pinot Noir 'El Compadre', Viña Echeverría
Valle De Malleco, Chile
Spiced cherry, raspberry and dark blueberry rise from the glass, joined by hibiscus, violet and a delicate thread of wild herbs. There is an appealing brightness to the aromatics, with the wine’s cool southern origins giving its fruit a lifted, energetic personality.
Silky and supple on the palate, this is Pinot Noir built around freshness rather than weight. Fine tannins and vivid acidity frame the ripe red fruit, while discreet French oak brings gentle spice and texture. Graceful, expressive and immediately drinkable, it offers plenty of character for the money and a fascinating glimpse of Chile’s emerging cool-climate south.
For when the evening calls for something red, elegant and slightly adventurous.
Pairs with Roast duck, grilled salmon, herb-roasted chicken, pork tenderloin or wild mushroom risotto.
Viña Echeverría is a family-run Chilean winery with roots stretching back to the 1930s and an agricultural heritage reaching much further. El Compadre shows the family’s exploratory side, taking Pinot Noir from the remote, rain-cooled Malleco Valley and shaping it with sensitive, low-intervention winemaking.
