2023 Numina Malbec, Bodegas Salentein

Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina

This is Uco Valley Malbec with depth, polish and a cool Andean edge. Blackcurrant, blueberry and ripe plum lead the nose, layered with violet, sweet spice, cedar, tobacco leaf and a touch of dark chocolate. It has the plush dark-fruited character Malbec drinkers love, but the altitude brings lift, freshness and a more refined sense of shape.

On the palate, it is juicy, broad and beautifully balanced, with ripe black fruit, smooth tannins and a long, elegant finish. The oak adds warmth and spice without taking over, while the natural freshness keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. A brilliant step-up Malbec for anyone who wants richness, structure and Mendoza polish in the same glass.

For when
A steak night needs proper Argentine polish.

Pairs with
Chargrilled ribeye, beef empanadas, lamb cutlets, slow-braised short rib, smoky aubergine, mushroom and lentil ragù, black bean stew or aged hard cheeses.

Numina is one of Salentein’s premium ranges, created to show the spirit of its high-altitude Uco Valley estates. This Malbec is rooted in selected parcels from Finca El Oasis, the winery’s oldest estate vineyard, sitting around 1,200m above sea level. The combination of Andean sunlight, cool nights and careful cellar work gives a wine that feels generous, polished and unmistakably Mendoza, but with freshness and elegance at its core.

Bodegas Salentein is one of the key names behind the rise of Argentina’s Uco Valley. Founded by Dutch entrepreneur Mijndert Pon, the estate helped bring international attention to high-altitude viticulture in Mendoza, where vineyards sit close to the Andes and benefit from intense sunlight, cool nights and pure mountain-fed irrigation.

The winery is based in Tunuyán and works across a range of elevated estate vineyards, many planted between 1,050 and 1,700m above sea level. These conditions are ideal for Malbec, giving ripe fruit, colour and concentration, but also the freshness and structure that make the best Uco Valley reds so compelling.

Salentein is also known for its striking architecture, gravity-led cellar design, cultural centre and long-standing commitment to combining wine, landscape and Argentine identity.

The 2023 Numina Malbec is 100% Malbec from the Uco Valley in Mendoza. Salentein’s official information highlights selected parcels from Finca El Oasis, the estate’s oldest vineyard, located at around 1,200m above sea level. The altitude, sunny days and cool nights help build ripe fruit while preserving freshness and aromatic detail.

The grapes are carefully selected, with fermentation handled to preserve fruit purity, colour and structure. Current vintage information points to a combination of stainless steel, concrete and large oak during fermentation, followed by ageing in French oak, giving the wine its spice, polish and rounded texture.
