2023 North Canterbury Orange, Pyramid Valley

North Canterbury, New Zealand

“Campari at Dusk”

Slightly hazy with a glowing amber hue, this is orange wine with confidence and clarity. The nose is lifted and intriguingly complex, all dried orange peel, clove, star anise and wild florals, with a faint Campari-like bittersweet edge that pulls you in. Beneath that sits stone fruit and citrus skin, layered and quietly savoury.

Then it hits the palate. An explosion of flavour, Christmas spice, mandarin rind and gentle herbal bitterness, wrapped in soft, fine tannins that coat the mouth without heaviness. The texture is supple and structured at once, thanks to extended whole bunch fermentation and time spent resting in concrete tulipes, clay amphora and old barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, without added sulphur during ageing, it feels alive and expressive. The finish is savoury, moreish and beautifully persistent, the kind of wine that keeps evolving in the glass.

For when you want something adventurous but beautifully made.
Pairs with aromatic dishes, Thai curries, roast duck, Middle Eastern spices or anything layered and fragrant.
If this wine were a mood, it would be golden hour turning into evening, warm light fading into something deeper and more intriguing.

Producer
Pyramid Valley’s wines are born from the dramatic limestone and clay soils of Waikari in North Canterbury. Founded by Mike and Claudia Elze Weersing after a 15-year global search for the perfect site, the estate quickly became one of New Zealand’s most revered names for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Since 2017, under the stewardship of Brian Sheth and Steve Smith, and guided by winemaker Huw Kinch, Pyramid Valley has continued its commitment to profound, site-expressive wines. Farming is sustainable and Biogro certified across their North Canterbury and Central Otago vineyards. The North Canterbury Orange reflects this philosophy, a blend of Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and aromatic varieties, crafted with patience and minimal intervention to create a wine that truly breathes of its place.

The wines of Pyramid Valley are born in the dramatic limestone and clay-derived soils and slopes of the estate farm in Waikari, North Canterbury. A unique high-altitude site that is home to some of the most profound Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines in the world. Mike and Claudia Elze Weersing spent 15 years searching the world to find this perfect place, which they finally purchased in 2000. Together, Mike and Claudia created remarkable wines for close to 20 years that have been recognised the world over. Fast-forward to 2017, when good friends Brian Sheth and Steve Smith realised their long-held vision of realising a wine dream together – to craft impeccable wines and inspiring experiences they could share – by purchasing Pyramid Valley. In 2018, Estate Manager and Winemaker Huw Kinch took on the role of guiding the new chapter at Pyramid Valley. The wines are produced from the original vineyards in North Canterbury as well as in Central Otago from the Pyramid Valley Mānatu vineyard, named after the ribbonwood (mānatu) tree. The launch of the 2022 Botanicals collection represents the pinnacle of their achievements at Pyramid Valley. Each wine is named after the common colloquial name of the meadow plant dominant in its respective vineyard block, and since their release in 2006, they have created a new dimension for fine New Zealand wine, illustrating the incredible impact of this remarkable vineyard on the sense of wine. They are wines that truly breathe of their place.

Primarily whole bunch fermented for 12 - 24 days in open top fermenters with a small amount of Blanc de Noir pressings added during fermentation. Aged in concrete Tulipes, clay amphora and old barrels for 6 months without SO2 before being bottled unfined and unfiltered
