2023 I Tratturi Primitivo, San Marzano

Puglia, Italy

Southern Velvet

Ripe, generous and irresistibly smooth, I Tratturi opens with dark cherry, blackberry and juicy prune, layered with rosemary, savoury spice and a gentle hint of vanilla. The palate is full and rounded, with plush dark fruit framed by soft, approachable tannins and just enough herbal freshness to keep everything composed. It’s rich without feeling heavy, warming without becoming sweet, finishing smooth, softly spiced and wonderfully satisfying.

For when: there’s something bubbling in the oven, and nobody is in a hurry to leave the table.

Pairs with: rich pasta dishes, meatballs in tomato sauce, grilled sausages, pizza, aubergine parmigiana, burgers or mature hard cheeses.

I Tratturi is an approachable expression of Primitivo from the warm, sun-soaked vineyards of southern Puglia. The vines grow around 100 metres above sea level in shallow clay soils scattered with rock, combining useful water retention with natural drainage. San Marzano leaves the wine completely unoaked, allowing Primitivo’s ripe fruit, Mediterranean warmth and naturally supple character to take centre stage. It is generous enough for hearty food but polished and easy-going enough to open whenever a comforting red is called for.

San Marzano was founded in 1962 when 19 growers from the village of San Marzano di San Giuseppe joined forces to create a shared winery. At the time, Puglia’s wine industry was still largely focused on supplying deeply coloured, full-bodied wines for blending elsewhere in Europe. The cooperative helped establish a more ambitious vision for the region, placing greater emphasis on vineyard quality, modern winemaking and wines bottled under their own identity.

Today, San Marzano works with more than 1,200 growers across Puglia. This extensive network provides access to vineyards of different ages, elevations and soil types, while a dedicated technical team oversees cultivation and harvest decisions. The estate is particularly associated with Primitivo, a variety exceptionally well suited to Puglia’s warm, dry climate and intense Mediterranean sunlight.

The winemaking style combines generous southern Italian fruit with polish and accessibility. While the estate produces several powerful, oak-matured expressions of Primitivo, I Tratturi sits at the fresher and more immediate end of the range. It captures the grape’s ripe, comforting personality without excessive weight or oak, making it an excellent introduction to both San Marzano and modern Puglian wine.

The 2023 I Tratturi is made from 100% Primitivo grown in vineyards approximately 100 metres above sea level. The shallow, clay-rich soils are interspersed with rock, providing a useful balance between drainage and moisture retention in Puglia’s hot, dry conditions. The vines are espalier trained to optimise sunlight exposure while helping to control vigour and maintain healthy fruit.

The grapes were harvested during the cool early morning in the first week of September. After arrival at the winery, they underwent temperature-controlled maceration at 25°C for approximately 10 days, extracting colour, flavour and soft tannins. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks using yeasts selected specifically for Primitivo, with the fermenting wine stirred twice daily.

The wine was made without oak to preserve its ripe fruit, freshness and varietal character.

Alcohol: 13.5%. Grape variety: 100% Primitivo. Closure: screwcap. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
