2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Réserve, Le Clos Du Caillou
Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone Valley, France
Deep garnet in the glass, this is Châteauneuf at its most refined, powerful yet poised, confident without excess. The nose unfolds in layers of black cherry, plum and dried fig, with undertones of violet, thyme, cocoa and warm spice. On the palate, it’s seamless and structured with ripe fruit wrapped in fine-grained tannins, balanced by mineral freshness and a graceful, lingering finish. There’s intensity here, but also restraint, the calm assurance of a great terroir speaking softly.
For when: the candles are low, the food’s slow, and conversation lingers.
Pairs with: roast lamb, game birds, or truffled mushrooms.
If this wine were a person, it’d be quietly charismatic - never loud, always unforgettable.
‘La Réserve’ is the flagship cuvée of Le Clos du Caillou, blending old-vine Grenache (55%) and Mourvèdre (45%) from sandy, galet-strewn parcels that border Rayas and La Crau, two of Châteauneuf’s most revered sites. Certified biodynamic, the vineyards yield fruit of remarkable purity and lift, fermented with native yeasts and aged in large foudre and demi-muids for nuance and texture.
The 2021 vintage, cooler and more classical than recent years, highlights finesse over power, a wine of aromatic precision, silken depth and effortless length. A quiet masterpiece from one of the Rhône’s most soulful estates.

"The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Réserve turned out magnificently and is one of the highlights of the vintage. The 2021 La Réserve was vinified from organically grown grapes - almost equally Grenache and Mourvèdre. Attractive aromas of predominantly red fruits, crushed flowers, thyme and exotic spices waft from the glass. It seamlessly lingers across the palate, dazzling with polished tannins and excellent freshness. The persistent finish is remarkable, with new flavors emerging long after the wine has left."

Bordering the legendary vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Le Clos du Caillou is one of the Rhône Valley’s most admired estates, a producer celebrated for its graceful, terroir-driven wines that balance power with poise. The estate’s origins date back to the 19th century, when its walled “clos” was mysteriously excluded from the official Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation during its creation in the 1930s, a historical quirk that left its vines, though identical in soil and exposure, classified as Côtes du Rhône.
Today, under the guidance of Sylvie Vacheron and winemaker Bruno Gaspard, the domaine farms organic and biodynamic vineyards across both appellations, producing wines that rank among the most elegant and expressive in the southern Rhône. Old-vine Grenache and Syrah thrive on the estate’s sand, galet and clay soils, yielding cuvées that combine supple fruit, savoury complexity, and a signature silky texture.
In the cellar, a gentle touch defines the philosophy: native yeasts, minimal extraction, and careful élevage in foudre and old barrels to preserve freshness and purity. The result is a collection that captures the quiet confidence of great Rhône terroir: wines of warmth, finesse, and unmistakable authenticity.
