2023 Coteau de Vernon, Domaine Georges Vernay

Condrieu, Rhone Valley, France

Granite Silk

Opulent, luminous and exquisitely poised, Coteau de Vernon reveals the extraordinary heights Viognier can reach in Condrieu. Ripe peach, apricot and succulent pear unfold alongside jasmine and acacia blossom, followed by candied citrus, delicate pastry and a gentle warmth of spice. There is an enticing exotic richness, yet every aroma remains beautifully defined, with a subtle mineral character lending restraint to the generous fruit. This is a white wine of presence and detail, revealing more with each return to the glass.

The palate is enveloping and finely textured, its concentrated fruit carried by a freshness that gives shape and movement to the richness. Layers of stone fruit and citrus flow into a long, nuanced finish, where a delicate bitterness reminiscent of orange peel adds grip and savoury definition. Powerful yet graceful, it offers the depth and persistence of a truly special bottle. Give it time to open when young, or cellar it patiently to explore the further complexity of one of Condrieu’s most celebrated wines.

For when: The evening deserves a white wine every bit as memorable as the occasion.

Pairs with: Serve with butter-roasted lobster, turbot with saffron beurre blanc, scallops with cauliflower purée, roast chicken with morels, crab ravioli or pumpkin and sage risotto.

Coteau de Vernon is both the historic heart of the domaine and one of Condrieu’s defining vineyard sites. Its steep terraces of biotite granite carry some of the appellation’s oldest Viognier vines, demanding painstaking work by hand. Francis Vernay first made a wine bearing the Coteau de Vernon name in 1940, establishing a cuvée that successive generations have refined into a benchmark for the grape.

The 2023 release combines notably generous, sun-ripened fruit with the precision that distinguishes Vernon. Peach, pear and exotic nuances give it breadth, while its mineral definition and gently bitter finish preserve balance. Its concentration makes this a compelling vintage for the cellar, allowing the wine’s floral perfume, texture and savoury detail to develop together.

Domaine Georges Vernay began with Francis Vernay’s work on the Coteau de Vernon during the 1930s. His son Georges took over in 1953 and became instrumental in preserving Condrieu and its signature grape, Viognier, during a period when the appellation’s future was uncertain. His commitment helped establish the foundations of its modern reputation.
The family’s vineyards occupy some of the Northern Rhône’s most demanding slopes, with holdings in Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph. Granite terraces and varied exposures give each parcel its own character, while the steep terrain demands close attention and extensive work by hand. Coteau de Vernon remains central to the estate’s identity.
Christine Vernay succeeded her father in 1996 and continues to lead the winemaking, now working alongside her daughter Emma. Under Christine’s stewardship, the estate has achieved organic certification and adopted biodynamic practices. Her approach combines meticulous vineyard care with sensitive vinification, preserving the fragrance, texture and individuality of each site.

Made from 100% Viognier, Coteau de Vernon comes from old vines on the steep granite terraces of the Vernon lieu-dit in Condrieu. The domaine describes the vines as ranging from approximately 50 to 80 years old. The terrain prevents conventional mechanisation, and the grapes are harvested by hand at full maturity into small crates.

Whole bunches are pressed directly, followed by cold settling of the juice and fermentation on the fine lees. Careful handling preserves Viognier’s delicate fragrance while allowing the wine to develop the depth and texture characteristic of the site.

The domaine’s published method uses a combination of large, 1,500-litre Stockinger oak casks and smaller barrels for maturation. Lees contact brings additional breadth and integration, while the measured use of oak supports the fruit. The 2023 has the concentration for extended bottle ageing, gradually developing more complex savoury and mature fruit notes.
