2023 Chardonnay, Hartenberg Wine Estate

Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa

Bottelary Gold

Bright, poised and quietly luxurious, this Chardonnay opens with fresh citrus, ripe pear and apricot, layered with subtle toast and a cool mineral note. The palate brings together zesty lemon and lime with crisp acidity, gentle creaminess and beautifully restrained French oak. It feels rounded without becoming heavy, finishing clean, refreshing and elegantly composed.

There is enough richness here to satisfy lovers of barrel-aged Chardonnay, but the wine’s freshness remains firmly in control. Refined, versatile and exceptionally easy to return to, it shows why Chardonnay has become Hartenberg’s white-wine star.

For when: The roast chicken is ready and the evening has nowhere else to be.

Pairs with: Smoked chicken, duck in a creamy sauce, seared tuna, grilled prawns, mushroom risotto or a goat’s cheese tart.

Hartenberg may be best known for its world-class Shiraz, but the estate has developed an equally impressive reputation for Chardonnay. Its vineyards sit in a secluded valley on the north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills, where varied aspects and elevations help preserve freshness while building flavour and texture.

Hartenberg Wine Estate occupies a secluded valley in Stellenbosch’s Bottelary Hills. The farm’s viticultural history dates back to 1692, when its earliest settlers began clearing the land and planting vines. The Mackenzie family has owned the estate since the late 1980s, investing in detailed vineyard selection, modern production facilities and the people who live and work on the farm.

The vineyards are planted across free-draining north-eastern slopes, with around 250 metres of elevation separating the lowest and highest parcels. Different aspects allow individual varieties to benefit from either morning or afternoon sun, while the valley’s Mediterranean climate provides warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters.

Hartenberg aims to produce wines that are rich and approachable but retain freshness, elegance and the ability to age. Regenerative farming now lies at the heart of the estate’s philosophy, with particular emphasis placed on soil health, biodiversity and working in harmony with nature. Hartenberg became a WWF Conservation Champion in 2023 in recognition of its environmental work.

The 2023 Chardonnay was hand-picked during the cool early morning over seven separate harvesting days, helping to preserve the variety’s delicate primary aromas and natural freshness.

Fruit from each vineyard parcel and individual picking date was kept separate in the cellar, allowing only the strongest components to be selected for the final blend. The wine was fermented and matured in 225-litre French oak barrels for 11 months, with 20% new oak providing texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit.

Alcohol: 13%. Residual sugar: 2.06g/L. Total acidity: 6.0g/L. pH: 3.47. Recommended drinking window: two to seven years from vintage.
