2023 Chardonnay, El Enemigo

Gualtallary, Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina

Mountain Rebel

This is Chardonnay with altitude, tension and a wonderfully dramatic streak. Lemon peel, green apple and white peach come through first, followed by a savoury edge of toasted spice, sea salt and flint. It feels generous without being heavy, with a creamy texture held beautifully in check by bright acidity and a long, mineral finish.

For when
You want a white wine with real presence, but still plenty of lift and freshness.

Pairs with
Roast chicken, crab linguine, grilled prawns, mushroom risotto or creamy cheeses.

If this wine were…
A sharp white shirt worn under a velvet dinner jacket.

El Enemigo is the collaboration between Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil, one of Argentina’s most celebrated winemaking minds. Based in Mendoza, the project has become known for wines that balance intellectual depth with sheer drinking pleasure. This Chardonnay comes from the heights of Gualtallary, where cool mountain air and limestone-rich soils give the wine its vivid freshness, saline edge and unmistakable sense of place.

El Enemigo was founded in 2010 by Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolás Catena Zapata, along with Alejandro Vigil, the award-winning head winemaker of Bodega Catena Zapata.

The El Enemigo vineyards are located in the Piedemonte al Sur region of Mendoza, south of Luján de Cuyo, at high altitudes between 930 and 1,470 metres. El Enemigo was born from a desire to carve their own path and a shared obsession with terroir. They thrive in the thrill of experimentation and delight in the new and unconventional. Their philosophy is to create wines that reflect the freshness and character of each individual vineyard: a pure expression of their exceptional terroir.

The name "El Enemigo", which translates as ‘the enemy’, is a nod to the internal battles and challenges they faced in their pursuit of excellence in winemaking and to the idea of challenging the status quo. Their captivating wines are highly sought-after. Recently, El Enemigo was awarded 17th place in the Top 100 of the World's Best Vineyards Awards 2025.

Fermentation took place in 500-litre French oak barrels using indigenous yeasts at a maximum temperature of 18°C, lasting for 40 days. The wine then underwent maturation for 12 months in 500-litre French oak barrels under a veil of flor.
