2023 Barbera D'Asti Cipressi 'Nizza' DOCG, Michele Chiarlo
Nizza, Piedmont, Italy
Black cherry, blackberry and ripe raspberry rise from the glass, joined by violet, liquorice, clove and sweet tobacco. A cool hint of menthol lifts the generous fruit, giving this Barbera an aromatic freshness beneath its darker, richer character.
Full-bodied and rounded, with concentrated berry fruit carried by Barbera’s naturally bright acidity. Fine structure and savoury spice bring definition, while ageing in large oak casks adds depth without hiding the fruit. Plush, harmonious and persistent, this is serious Nizza with warmth, energy and impressive polish.
For when: The pasta sauce has been simmering since lunchtime.
Pairs with: Wild boar ragù, roast pork, mushroom risotto, grilled steak, guinea fowl or mature goat’s cheese.
Cipressi takes its name from the cypress trees crowning the hill at Michele Chiarlo’s La Court estate. Made entirely from Barbera, it captures the concentration and savoury depth of Nizza, the historic Monferrato subzone that gained its own DOCG status in 2014.
