Constantia Glen’s 2022 THREE is a polished Cape Bordeaux blend with all the cool-climate elegance that makes Constantia such a fascinating source of red wine. Merlot leads the blend with plum, black cherry and rounded generosity, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc bring cassis, graphite, cedar, dried herbs and a fine peppery lift.

On the palate, it is rich but composed, with dark fruit, savoury spice and velvety tannins wrapped around a fresh, finely defined core. The 2022 vintage gives the wine balance and poise, with enough structure for the cellar but enough charm to enjoy now with proper food. It is graceful, quietly confident and very easy to trust.

Constantia Glen is one of the most compelling modern estates in South Africa’s oldest wine region. Set on the upper slopes of the Constantiaberg, just minutes from Cape Town, the estate sits between Table Mountain and False Bay, where cool maritime breezes, decomposed granite, sandstone and clay-rich subsoils create a distinctive home for elegant Bordeaux-style wines.

The Waibel family has owned the 60-hectare property since 1960, though its modern wine story began after a devastating Cape Peninsula wildfire in 2000 led to extensive soil studies and the planting of vineyards. Today, just 29 hectares are under vine, keeping production limited and estate-focused. Cellar master Justin van Wyk has been central to Constantia Glen’s rise, bringing continuity, precision and serious acclaim to the wines. His work has helped establish the estate as a benchmark for cool-climate South African blends, with THREE offering a brilliant route into the style: refined, generous and unmistakably Constantia.

The 2022 THREE is a blend of 54% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Cabernet Franc, all grown on the Constantia Glen estate. The vineyards sit at 130 to 270 metres above sea level on north-east-facing slopes below Constantia Nek, where afternoon sun, cool maritime breezes from False Bay and water-retentive clay subsoils help the grapes ripen slowly while retaining freshness.

The 2022 season was cool and late, following a cold winter and a steady growing period. Red grape harvesting began on 21 March and continued for four weeks, with Cabernet Sauvignon concluding the harvest on 19 April. The slower ripening period helped build aromatic complexity, flavour concentration and fine tannin texture.

The wine was matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, using 20% new oak, 50% second-fill and 30% third-fill barrels. It was lightly filtered before bottling to soften the tannin structure while preserving freshness and definition. The result is a Merlot-led Constantia blend with dark fruit, graphite, cedar, supple tannins and excellent ageing potential.
