Pale and brilliantly bright, the Florita opens with lime zest, lemon blossom and crisp green apple, layered with white peach, citrus pith, talc and a delicate touch of candied ginger. The aromas are precise and beautifully restrained, revealing more detail with every swirl.

Bone-dry and intensely focused, the palate carries concentrated citrus fruit along a line of electric acidity. There is a subtle chalky texture and saline mineral quality beneath the fruit, giving the wine remarkable shape and persistence. Powerful without feeling heavy, this is a thrilling Clare Valley Riesling that is compelling now but built to evolve for many years.

For when: You want a white wine that sharpens the senses and refuses to fade into the background.

Pairs with: Grilled sea bass, mackerel, oysters, sashimi, Thai salads, salt and pepper squid or fresh goat’s cheese.

Florita means “little flower”, but the vineyard has a considerable place in Australian wine history. Located in Watervale, it was planted with Palomino in 1946 before being replanted with Riesling in 1962. Legendary winemaker John Vickery sourced fruit from Florita for the great Leo Buring Watervale Rieslings of the 1960s and 1970s. The Barry family purchased the vineyard in 1986, and The Florita was first released under the Jim Barry name in 2004. Only carefully selected rows from its shallow, loamy soils over calcareous siltstone are chosen for this flagship bottling.

Jim Barry Wines is one of the defining names of the Clare Valley. Jim Barry graduated from Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947 and became the region’s first professionally qualified winemaker. His work helped establish the Clare Valley as one of Australia’s leading regions for Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The estate remains family-owned, with Jim’s son Peter and third-generation family members Tom, Sam and Olivia continuing his legacy. Their philosophy begins in the vineyard, and the family owns a collection of distinctive sites throughout the Clare Valley and Coonawarra, allowing them complete control over fruit quality.

Riesling has always been central to the estate. The Florita represents its most historic and refined expression, combining the precision of Watervale fruit with the concentration, acidity and structure required for long-term ageing.

The 2022 The Florita is made from 100% Riesling grown in the historic Florita Vineyard, fifteen kilometres south of Clare in Watervale. The finest fruit comes from selected rows planted in shallow brown loam over calcareous siltstone, soils that naturally restrict vigour and produce Riesling of intensity and fine structure.

The grapes were harvested by hand during the cool of night and quickly chilled to preserve their delicate aromas and natural acidity. After pressing, the juice was cold settled before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. This clean, protective approach retained the purity of the citrus fruit and the vineyard’s distinctive mineral character.

The finished wine was bottled under screwcap to protect its freshness and considerable ageing potential.
