2022 Soave Classico I Palchi, Inama

Soave, Veneto, Italy

Volcanic Poise

Elegant, layered and intensely mineral, I Palchi is a selection of old-vine Garganega from the finest terraces of Monte Foscarino. Citrus, Williams pear and white flowers are joined by white pepper, cardamom and a cool flinty note, giving the wine remarkable aromatic precision. The volcanic basalt beneath the vines comes through as tension and savoury depth rather than weight.

On the palate, it is concentrated yet beautifully fresh, with ripe yellow fruit, citrus drive and a long, spicy, mineral finish. Partial ageing in large oak casks brings texture and breadth, while stainless steel preserves clarity and energy. This is a serious Soave for customers who want depth without heaviness, with enough complexity for fine dining and enough freshness to remain wonderfully drinkable.

For when: A special dinner needs a white with volcanic depth, precision and quiet grandeur.

Pairs with: Turbot, grilled langoustines, seafood risotto, roast chicken, veal, porcini, aged Monte Veronese or truffle dishes.

I Palchi comes from selected micro-plots within the terraced vineyards of Monte Foscarino, where mature Garganega vines grow on pure basaltic lava soils. Inama created the bottling after identifying parcels capable of giving exceptional purity and concentration, making it one of the clearest expressions of the estate’s belief in serious, site-driven Soave.

Inama is one of the estates that helped restore Soave Classico’s reputation as a source of serious Italian white wine. Giuseppe “Bepi” Inama began purchasing small parcels on Monte Foscarino in the 1960s, convinced that old Garganega vines on the area’s volcanic hills could produce wines of real complexity and longevity.

His son Stefano took over the winemaking direction in 1992 and has since been joined by the third generation, Matteo, Alessio and Luca. The family now farms around 28 hectares in Soave Classico, alongside vineyards in the Colli Berici, with a strong emphasis on regenerative and sustainable viticulture.

What separates Inama is its focus on site. Rather than treating Soave as a simple fresh white, the family works individual volcanic vineyards to show different expressions of Garganega. I Palchi sits at the more ambitious end of that philosophy, drawn from carefully selected terraces of mature vines and built for texture, minerality and longevity. It is a bottle for customers who want Soave with fine-wine seriousness.

The 2022 I Palchi is made from 100% Garganega from selected terraces on Monte Foscarino. The vineyard sits at around 200 metres above sea level with an east-to-north-east exposure and pure basaltic lava soils. Some of the pergola-trained vines date back to the 1960s. The vineyard is farmed regeneratively, with no herbicides or chemical fertilisers since 2009, and the grapes are harvested by hand.

The 2022 season was hot and dry, with high summer temperatures managed through shading and some emergency irrigation. Rain in mid-August refreshed the vines, and harvest ran from late August into October, producing healthy, aromatically ripe fruit at relatively low yields.

After chilling, the grapes are destemmed and individually selected, followed by a short maceration in the press. Parcels are vinified separately, with 55% fermented and matured in stainless steel and 45% in large oak casks. Alcohol is 12.5%, residual sugar is 0.9 g/L, and the wine is bottled under DIAM.

The result is a Soave with real depth but no heaviness. Citrus and pear lead into white flowers, pepper, spice and flinty minerality, while the split between steel and large oak brings both precision and texture. It is already compelling now, particularly with seafood or richer white-meat dishes, but its concentration and acidity suggest excellent further development in bottle.
