2022 'Rubrato' Irpinia Aglianico, Feudi di San Gregorio

Irpinia, Campania, Italy

Rubrato is Aglianico in its most immediate and pleasure-giving form, full of southern Italian energy without losing the grape’s serious edge. The 2022 opens with wild black fruits, dark cherry, plum, liquorice and violet, followed by spice, underbrush and a delicate balsamic note that gives it a savoury Irpinian lift.

On the palate, it is deep, balanced and impressively polished, with ripe fruit at the centre and soft, well-structured tannins carrying everything neatly through the finish. Aglianico’s natural grip is there, but this is the youthful, approachable side of the grape: fresh, dark-fruited, gently spicy and very easy to bring to the table.

For when
A proper Italian red is needed, but you still want freshness and flow.

Pairs with
Slow-cooked beef ragù, grilled sausages, lamb chops, aubergine parmigiana, mushroom pasta, roast pork, hard cheeses or pizza with spicy salami.

Feudi di San Gregorio is one of Campania’s defining modern estates, based in Sorbo Serpico in the heart of Irpinia. Its vineyards lie among gentle hills shaped by volcanic, sandstone and marl soils, where altitude and mountain air bring freshness to the region’s powerful native grapes. Rubrato captures the estate’s gift for making Aglianico feel both authentic and accessible, showing the depth, spice and structure of southern Italy with a polished, contemporary touch.

One of the main protagonists in the renaissance of Southern Italian wines, Feudi di San Gregorio has carved out a reputation for making truly world-class wines in less than 30 years. The company began in the mid-1980s with the aim of safeguarding local traditions and unlocking the potential of key indigenous grapes such as Fiano, Greco, Falanghina and Aglianico.

Fermentation and maceration took place in stainless steel tanks over period of two to three weeks, at controlled temperatures. This was followed by eight to 10 months of maturation in stainless steel vats, retaining the freshness and purity of fruit. The wine was then aged for a further six months in bottle, prior to release.
