2022 Rioja Blanco, Finca Allende

Rioja, Spain

Golden Curve

Finca Allende’s 2022 Rioja Blanco is white Rioja with real intent: rich, textured and quietly Burgundian, but still unmistakably Spanish. Viura forms the core, with a little Malvasía adding perfume and lift. Expect grapefruit, lemon peel, peach, greengage and dried flowers, layered with honey, walnut, spice, vanilla and a gentle balsamic note.

On the palate, it is full-flavoured and creamy, but not heavy. The oak gives breadth and polish, while the fruit keeps a fresh citrus line through the middle. There is weight, yes, but also drive, minerality and a long, savoury finish. A serious white for the table, with enough structure to age and enough charm to pour now.

For when
The white wine needs to hold its own with proper food.

Pairs with
Roast chicken, grilled turbot, scallops, lobster, mushroom rice, pork with apple, creamy pasta, Manchego, Comté or roast cauliflower with almonds.

Finca Allende is the deeply personal project of Miguel Ángel de Gregorio, one of Rioja’s great modern terroir champions. Based in Briones, in Rioja Alta, the estate is known for wines that combine traditional varieties with precise vineyard expression and carefully judged French oak. This Blanco captures that philosophy beautifully: old-vine Viura, a touch of Malvasía, texture, freshness and the kind of quiet complexity that makes white Rioja so compelling.

Finca Allende is one of Rioja Alta’s most important modern estates, created by Mercedes and Miguel Ángel de Gregorio in the hilltop village of Briones. The name Allende roughly means “further”, a fitting idea for a producer built on the desire to push Rioja beyond broad regional style and towards precise vineyard expression. Miguel Ángel de Gregorio is widely regarded as one of Rioja’s key modernising voices, but his ambition is not to erase tradition. It is to recover the greatness of Rioja’s historic wines through site, old vines and detail.

The estate works with vineyards in Briones and neighbouring villages on the right bank of the Ebro, where red clay, gravel and calcareous subsoils help give the wines their structure and mineral edge. Finca Allende is particularly respected for its single-vineyard reds such as Calvario, Gaminde and Mingortiz, but its white Rioja is equally serious. This is a producer with pedigree, ambition and a strong point of view: Rioja with depth, polish and a true sense of place.

The 2022 Rioja Blanco is made from 95% Viura and 5% Malvasía, sourced from mature vineyards in Briones, Rioja Alta. The vines are over 55 years old, bush-trained and farmed with a sustainable approach, using organic fertilisers and no herbicides. The soils around Briones are marked by clay, gravel and calcareous elements, giving the wine structure, texture and mineral definition.

The grapes are hand-harvested and selected carefully before fermentation in French oak barrels. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature, followed by 14 months of ageing in French oak on the lees. Regular bâtonnage during the early part of ageing builds the wine’s creamy texture, while the oak adds spice, walnut, honey and subtle vanilla without overwhelming the citrus and stone-fruit core.

The result is a classic barrel-fermented white Rioja with a modern precision: full-bodied, textured and persistent, but with enough freshness and acidity to keep the finish bright. It is built for food now, but has the structure to develop further complexity in bottle.
