2022 Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon, Chateau Haut-Grelot

Bordeaux, France

Plush, savoury and instantly inviting, this Merlot-led Bordeaux opens with damson, ripe blackberry and red cherry, layered with vanilla, gentle spice and a touch of cedar. A subtle earthy, meaty note beneath the fruit adds classic claret character, while the influence of seasoned oak brings warmth and complexity without becoming heavy.

Round and generous on the palate, with juicy berry fruit supported by firm but polished tannins and well-judged freshness. Merlot provides softness and breadth, while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure, spice and a more savoury edge. Harmonious, long and beautifully approachable, this delivers proper Bordeaux character without demanding a grand occasion.

Pairs with: Roast lamb, steak frites, duck confit, beef bourguignon, mushroom risotto or mature Comté.

The estate’s Première Cuvée comes from 15 hectares of gravelly, sandy and silty soils within Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, close to the Gironde Estuary. Merlot thrives here, developing generous fruit and supple texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon brings backbone and freshness to the finished wine.

Château Haut-Grelot was founded in 1920 from a small family farm in the village of Les Grelots, near Blaye. Joël Bonneau took over the property in 1975, dedicating it entirely to viticulture and gradually expanding its vineyards. The estate is now led by the fourth generation, Julien and Céline Bonneau, who continue the family’s balance of tradition, accessibility and careful modernisation.

The estate now comprises 67 hectares, with 42 hectares planted to red varieties and 25 hectares to white. Sandy and gravelly hillsides near the Gironde Estuary give the red wines fruit, concentration and power, while the more inland sandy, clay and loam soils favour freshness and aromatic expression. The vines have an average age of approximately 25 years.

Julien and Céline combine modern cellar equipment with an artisanal approach to vinification. Château Haut-Grelot holds both High Environmental Value and Vigneron Indépendant certification. Since 2015, the estate has participated in the OPTIDOSE programme to reduce vineyard treatments, while part of the property is now farmed organically.

The 2022 is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from 15 hectares of gravelly, sandy and silty soils. Vineyard yields were approximately 50 hectolitres per hectare.

The grapes were mechanically harvested and selectively sorted to remove any unsuitable fruit before vinification. Merlot provides the wine’s generous red and dark fruit, while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes tannic structure, freshness and savoury definition.

The wine was matured for 12 months in seasoned oak barrels that had previously held two vintages. This restrained approach to oak ageing softens the tannins and adds gentle vanilla and spice while allowing the ripe fruit to remain at the centre of the wine.

Alcohol: 13.5%. Recommended drinking window: 2026 to 2030.
