Founded by Gavin Chanin in 2007, Chanin has become a benchmark for refined, site-led Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County. Los Alamos sits between Santa Maria and Santa Ynez at around 800 feet, where cool air, bright sunshine and sand-and-lime soils give Pinot Noir its distinctive red-fruited, herbal and mineral character.

Chanin Wine Co. was founded in 2007 by Gavin Chanin, whose route into wine began during his UCLA years with harvest work at Au Bon Climat and Qupé under Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist. Experience in South Africa and New Zealand, followed by travel through Burgundy and Italy, helped shape a style built on restraint, precision and vineyard character rather than sheer power.

The range is devoted to single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County. Chanin seeks out distinctive sites, including some of the county’s oldest vines, and treats each vineyard as an individual wine rather than blending away its identity. Cool Pacific influence, marine-derived soils and a long growing season provide the foundations for wines with perfume, freshness and natural balance.

The vineyards Chanin works with are organically or sustainably farmed. In the cellar, the approach is gentle, avoiding commercial yeasts, bacteria, enzymes, filtration and intrusive processing. The aim is clarity rather than cosmetics, producing wines that are compelling when young but have the structure to develop. Chanin’s background as an artist is more than a footnote: every label carries one of his own works, a fitting signature for wines that are precise, individual, and deeply connected to place.

This is 100% Pinot Noir from Los Alamos Vineyard, a single site labelled Santa Barbara County because Los Alamos does not have its own federal appellation. The vineyard lies at around 800 feet, between the cooler Santa Maria Valley and warmer Santa Ynez Valley, with sand-and-lime soils, strong sunshine and cooling coastal influence.

Fermentation follows Chanin’s low-intervention philosophy, relying on native yeasts without commercial bacteria or enzymes. The wine is bottled without filtration. Alcohol is 13.5%.
