2022 Lirac, Domaine des Cigalounes
Lirac, Rhone Valley, France
Garrigue Velvet
This is southern Rhône red with warmth, charm and a proper savoury edge. Wild cherry, damson and blackberry lead the nose, layered with cocoa, cracked pepper, dried herbs, liquorice and a little smoky spice. It has the generous fruit you want from Lirac, but the feel is more polished than rustic, with that lovely garrigue character running through the glass.
On the palate, it is full-flavoured, smooth and satisfying, with ripe dark fruit, silky tannins and a long, warming finish. Grenache brings the juicy heart, Syrah adds spice and structure, while Mourvèdre gives depth and a meaty, savoury note. A brilliant Rhône red for anyone who loves Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but wants something a little more relaxed, great value and ready to pour.
For when
A roast dinner needs southern Rhône comfort.
Pairs with
Slow-roast lamb, beef stew, pork belly, grilled sausages, mushroom gratin, aubergine bake, lentil casserole, hard cheeses or rosemary roast potatoes.
Domaine des Cigalounes is a small organic estate on the rocky plateau between Tavel and Lirac, just across the Rhône from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine captures what makes Lirac so appealing: richness without heaviness, ripe fruit without losing spice, and a savoury herbal note that feels unmistakably southern French. It is a superb bottle for Rhône drinkers looking for character, comfort and value in the same glass.
