2022 Lirac, Domaine des Cigalounes

Lirac, Rhone Valley, France

Garrigue Velvet

This is southern Rhône red with warmth, charm and a proper savoury edge. Wild cherry, damson and blackberry lead the nose, layered with cocoa, cracked pepper, dried herbs, liquorice and a little smoky spice. It has the generous fruit you want from Lirac, but the feel is more polished than rustic, with that lovely garrigue character running through the glass.

On the palate, it is full-flavoured, smooth and satisfying, with ripe dark fruit, silky tannins and a long, warming finish. Grenache brings the juicy heart, Syrah adds spice and structure, while Mourvèdre gives depth and a meaty, savoury note. A brilliant Rhône red for anyone who loves Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but wants something a little more relaxed, great value and ready to pour.

For when
A roast dinner needs southern Rhône comfort.

Pairs with
Slow-roast lamb, beef stew, pork belly, grilled sausages, mushroom gratin, aubergine bake, lentil casserole, hard cheeses or rosemary roast potatoes.

Domaine des Cigalounes is a small organic estate on the rocky plateau between Tavel and Lirac, just across the Rhône from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine captures what makes Lirac so appealing: richness without heaviness, ripe fruit without losing spice, and a savoury herbal note that feels unmistakably southern French. It is a superb bottle for Rhône drinkers looking for character, comfort and value in the same glass.

Domaine des Cigalounes is a small seven-hectare estate in Lirac, on the western side of the southern Rhône. The property sits on a rocky plateau between the villages of Tavel and Lirac, opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape across the river. It is a classic setting for generous, sun-filled Rhône reds, with stony soils, Mediterranean warmth and the wild herb character that makes this part of France so distinctive.

The Lemoine family has cultivated the vines here for generations, and the estate has been certified organic since 2012. The approach is thoughtful and restrained, with a focus on balance, finesse and silky tannins rather than heavy extraction. That matters in Lirac, where the wines can be powerful, but the best examples also show freshness, spice and savoury detail.

The 2022 Lirac from Domaine des Cigalounes is a traditional southern Rhône blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The vines are grown organically on red soils rich in iron and minerals, with a pebbly topsoil that helps retain heat and support steady ripening.

The estate focuses on this single Lirac wine, allowing the blend to reflect the full character of the vineyard. The grapes are harvested at good maturity, with around 20% of the finished wine matured in oak barrels to add quiet complexity, spice and structure without overwhelming the fruit.

The result is smooth, generous and ready to drink, with wild cherry, damson, cocoa, garrigue herbs and silky tannins. It has enough depth for hearty food, but the texture is polished and easy to enjoy..
