2022 Les Millères, Domaine Gardiés

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Blackberry, ripe cherry and dark raspberry rise from the glass, layered with wild Mediterranean herbs, pepper and gentle oak spice. Richly scented but not overblown, it captures the sun-baked character of the Roussillon with an appealing thread of mineral freshness.

Smooth and juicy on the palate, with generous dark fruit framed by dense, finely integrated tannins. Grenache brings warmth and generosity, Syrah adds perfume and spice, while Carignan and Mourvèdre provide freshness, structure and savoury depth. The finish is long and gently herbal, making this an accomplished southern French red with both immediate appeal and the substance to develop further.

For when: The barbecue is glowing, and dinner is moving outdoors.

Pairs with: Provençal lamb, grilled steak, wild boar sausages, duck confit, vegetable cassoulet or mature Tomme de Brebis.

Les Millères brings together fruit from Domaine Gardiés’ contrasting vineyards at Vingrau and Espira-de-l’Agly. Clay-limestone and black schist soils, old vines and cooling Mediterranean winds create a wine that combines generous southern fruit with freshness, spice and mineral definition.

Domaine Gardiés is one of the defining family estates of the Roussillon, with roots stretching back to the Castany family’s arrival at Mas Farine in the Corbières during the eighteenth century. The Gardiés name became attached to the property when Noëlle Castany, herself trained in viticulture, married Henri Gardiés. Jean Gardiés took charge during the 1960s, before his son, also Jean, began developing and bottling the estate’s wines in the 1990s. Today, Jean works alongside his son Victor.

The domaine comprises approximately 35 hectares around Espira-de-l’Agly, Vingrau and Tautavel. Its vineyards occupy two strikingly different landscapes: dark schist terraces around Espira and clay-limestone soils at Vingrau. Positioned between the Mediterranean and the foothills of the Corbières, the vines benefit from sunshine, poor stony soils and persistent winds that help preserve freshness.

Chemical treatments were abandoned in 2004, and the estate is now certified organic, with biodiversity and careful soil management central to its approach. Grapes are harvested by hand, and all wines are produced entirely from estate-grown fruit. Domaine Gardiés has earned its reputation through powerful but increasingly refined wines that express the wild herbs, warmth and mineral character of the Roussillon.

The 2022 Les Millères combines 40% Grenache Noir, 35% Syrah, 20% Carignan and 5% Mourvèdre. The fruit comes from organically cultivated vineyards on the clay-limestone soils of Vingrau and the schist terraces of Espira-de-l’Agly.

The grapes were harvested by hand and underwent a 14-day maceration in concrete tanks. Gentle pigeage was used during fermentation to extract colour, flavour and tannin without making the wine feel heavy or overly muscular.

Maturation lasted 12 months. Half of the wine remained in concrete vats to preserve its fruit and freshness, while the other half matured in 600-litre French oak demi-muids, adding texture and subtle spice without dominating the blend.

Alcohol: 13.5%. Best served at approximately 16 to 18°C. Enjoy now with hearty food or cellar for up to eight years from the vintage.
