2022 GSM, Elderton

Barossa Valley, Australia

Greenock Glow

This is Barossa GSM with colour, charm and a proper Rhône-inspired pulse. Spiced plum, raspberry and red berries lift from the glass, followed by musk, star anise, red liquorice, soft earth and a little savoury spice. It has the warmth and generosity you expect from the Barossa, but the Grenache-led style keeps it bright, fragrant and beautifully easy to approach.

On the palate, it is juicy, supple and polished, with raspberry fruit, fine tannins and a creamy, flowing mid-palate. Grenache brings the red-fruited core and lift, Shiraz adds dark fruit and weight, while Mataro gives spice, grip and a savoury finish. A brilliant bottle for anyone who loves southern Rhône reds, but wants something smoother, sunnier and unmistakably Barossan.

For when
A relaxed dinner needs a red with charm and spice.

Pairs with
Chargrilled lamb, roast pork, beef koftas, venison sausages, mushroom pizza, aubergine bake, lentil stew, charcuterie or hard cheeses.

Elderton’s GSM comes from the family’s Greenock Vineyard in the western Barossa, a site with old plantings, tough conditions and real personality. It captures the modern side of the Barossa beautifully: generous but not heavy, fruit-driven but not simple, and savoury enough to keep every glass interesting. This is a confident, food-loving red from one of the region’s most trusted family names.

Perfect for enjoying now, the 2022 GSM also has the structure and balance to cellar gracefully for 5+ years.

Elderton is one of the Barossa Valley’s great family-owned estates, run by the Ashmead family and rooted in some of the region’s most historic vineyard land. Neil and Lorraine Ashmead began restoring the property at the end of the 1970s, releasing the first Elderton wine in 1982. Since then, the estate has become known for generous, age-worthy Barossa reds, including its celebrated Command Shiraz and Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon.

Today, the next generation continues the family’s work with a focus on estate vineyards, sustainability and regional character. Elderton’s vineyards span important Barossa sites, including the original Nuriootpa estate and the Greenock Vineyard in the west of the valley.

The Greenock site is especially important for Rhône varieties such as Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Its old vines, ironstone-rich soils and exposed conditions produce wines with ripe fruit, spice and structure.

The 2022 GSM is a blend of 43% Grenache, 34% Shiraz and 23% Mataro, grown entirely on Elderton’s Greenock Vineyard in the western Barossa Valley. The vineyard covers 60 acres and includes plantings dating back to 1915, with free-draining, ironstone-rich soils and sandy sections that help shape the wine’s fragrance, spice and texture.

Grenache and Mataro were co-fermented in open cement vats to build a vibrant, savoury backbone, while a parcel of Greenock Shiraz was added for mid-palate weight and darker fruit. The wine was matured for 7 months in seasoned French oak puncheons, with the Grenache and Mataro component left on lees throughout that period to add creaminess and flow.
