2022 Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Gualtallary Magnum, El Enemigo

Gualtallary, Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina

En-Primeur offer: wines arrive in November 2026

A rare Magnum of 2022 Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Gualtallary

This is the most thrillingly precise expression in the Gran Enemigo single-vineyard line-up, made even more compelling in magnum. Redcurrant, black cherry and wild raspberry lead the nose, lifted by violet, mountain herbs, cracked pepper, ash, graphite and a cool chalky edge. Gualtallary brings altitude, limestone tension and a sense of brightness that cuts straight through the fruit.

On the palate, it is vivid, mineral and beautifully charged, with juicy red and black fruit wrapped around firm tannins, bright acidity and a long, crystalline finish. The Cabernet Franc gives perfume, grip and savoury lift, while the Malbec adds colour and darker fruit. In magnum, this becomes a serious collector’s bottle: age-worthy, energetic and full of Mendoza electricity.

For when
A great dinner deserves the magnum with electricity.

Pairs with
Chargrilled ribeye, lamb cutlets with chimichurri, slow-braised beef, venison, mushroom empanadas, black garlic aubergine, lentil ragù or aged hard cheeses.

Gran Enemigo Gualtallary is the benchmark site in El Enemigo’s celebrated single-vineyard Cabernet Franc collection. Set in Tupungato in the Uco Valley, Gualtallary is famed for high-altitude vineyards, calcareous soils and wines with piercing freshness, chalky structure and aromatic lift. In magnum, that combination of tension, structure and refinement feels especially well suited to long ageing, special dinners and serious collectors.

El Enemigo is one of Argentina’s most admired modern wine projects, founded by Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil. Adrianna brings a historian’s eye and deep connection to Mendoza’s wine culture, while Alejandro Vigil is one of the country’s most influential winemakers, known for his work with high-altitude vineyards, precision farming and the rise of Cabernet Franc as a serious Argentine fine-wine variety.

The name El Enemigo is about the inner battle: the pursuit of something more meaningful, more expressive and more difficult. That idea runs through the wines. Rather than relying only on Mendoza’s natural ripeness, El Enemigo seeks tension, freshness, structure and vineyard character.

Gran Enemigo is the estate’s most ambitious red-wine tier, focused on Cabernet Franc-led wines from distinct Mendoza sites including Gualtallary, Chacayes, El Cepillo and Agrelo. These are polished, age-worthy wines with international stature, but they remain unmistakably Argentine: vibrant, savoury, mountain-shaped and full of personality.

The 2022 Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Gualtallary is Cabernet Franc with 15% Malbec from Gualtallary in Tupungato, Uco Valley, Mendoza. The site sits high in the Andean foothills, with calcareous, chalk-influenced soils that help give the wine its freshness, firm tannins and mineral definition.

The fruit was harvested in stages over roughly a month and a half, building complexity through different levels of ripeness and texture. Fermentation included 40% whole bunches, bringing aromatic lift, savoury spice and additional structure. The wine was then aged for 15 months in concrete, preserving purity and site expression rather than pushing oak sweetness to the front.

The 2022 Mendoza vintage was exceptional, with strong natural acidity, excellent concentration, ripe tannins and balanced alcohol levels. That vintage character suits Gualtallary beautifully, giving a wine that is intense and structured, yet bright, chalky and remarkably precise. The magnum format gives the wine extra presence at the table and added appeal for long-term cellaring, milestone dinners and serious food-led occasions.
