2022 Etna Rosso, Graci
Etna, Sicily, Italy
Volcanic Silk
This is Etna Rosso with perfume, pulse and a streak of volcanic electricity. Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grown on the north-eastern slopes of Mount Etna, it opens with red cherry, pomegranate, blood orange, and wild strawberry before violet, dried herbs, black pepper, liquorice, ash, and crushed stone begin to emerge. It has that magical Etna tension: delicate in colour, but full of nerve, spice and mineral force.
The palate is medium-bodied, bright and beautifully savoury, with red fruit, citrus peel, fine tannins and a smoky volcanic edge running into a long, lifted finish. It feels somewhere between Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, but with its own Sicilian fire: fragrant, stony, energetic and quietly hypnotic.
For when you want a red with elegance, danger and a little volcano in its soul.
Pairs with roast pork, lamb chops.
For when you want a red with elegance, danger and a little grilled tuna, mushroom pasta, aubergine parmigiana, charcuterie, hard cheeses, or anything with herbs, smoke and tomato.
If this wine were… a landscape, it would be Etna at dusk, black lava underfoot, red fruit in the air and smoke curling above the vines.
Graci is based in Passopisciaro on the northern slope of Mount Etna, where Alberto Graci has helped define the modern reputation of the volcano’s wines. The estate works with native grapes, high-altitude vineyards and volcanic soils, focusing on Nerello Mascalese and Carricante grown between around 600 and 1,000 metres. Its style is precise, organic and low-intervention, with wines that capture Etna’s rare mix of perfume, freshness and mineral intensity.
