2022 Chenin Blanc, Lismore

Overberg, South Africa

Sea Jasmine

This is cool-climate Cape Chenin with perfume, tension and a beautifully savoury edge. Pear, quince and wild peach lead the nose, lifted by orange blossom, jasmine, citrus peel, sea spray and crushed stone. It has Chenin’s natural richness, but the feel is finely drawn rather than broad, with a fresh coastal line running through the aromatics.

On the palate, it is dry, textured and energetic, with yellow fruit, orange zest, stem ginger and a clean mineral finish. Barrel fermentation and time on lees give shape and quiet depth, while the acidity keeps everything bright, focused and food-friendly. A brilliant South African Chenin for anyone who loves Loire-like precision, but wants a little more Cape sunshine and texture.

For when
A seafood dinner needs Chenin with elegance and edge.

Pairs with
Grilled prawns, crab linguine, roast hake, scallops, lemon roast chicken, pork belly, Cape Malay curry, mushroom risotto, goat’s cheese or Comté.

Lismore’s Chenin Blanc shows the lighter, more linear side of Samantha O’Keefe’s Cape South Coast range. Sourced from cool coastal-influenced sites, it captures the clarity and freshness that make her wines so distinctive: expressive fruit, floral detail, mineral drive and a calm, restrained hand in the cellar. It is polished, thoughtful and unmistakably Lismore.

Lismore Estate Vineyards is one of South Africa’s most distinctive cool-climate producers, founded by Californian Samantha O’Keefe in the foothills of the Riviersonderend mountains near Greyton. After leaving a career in television, O’Keefe bought an isolated farm in the early 2000s and began planting vines in a place few had considered for serious wine.

That decision helped establish Greyton as a recognised Wine of Origin, with Lismore widely seen as the pioneer of this dramatic, high-altitude corner of the Cape South Coast. The estate’s vineyards sit around 300m above sea level, with cold winters, warm summers and marked day-to-night temperature shifts helping preserve freshness and aromatic detail.

Samantha’s wines are admired for their precision, texture and European sense of restraint. Even after a devastating wildfire in 2019 destroyed her home and winery, Lismore has continued to produce some of the Cape’s most compelling wines.

The 2022 Chenin Blanc is 100% Chenin Blanc from cool coastal-influenced Cape South Coast sites, with current listings pointing to fruit from Stanford and Bot River. These areas bring freshness, sea-spray character and a slower ripening profile, helping build aromatic complexity while keeping the wine bright and mineral.

The grapes were whole-bunch pressed and handled with a gentle oxidative approach. Fermentation took place with natural yeasts in barrel and concrete egg, with a modest proportion of new oak used for texture rather than obvious flavour. The wine spent 11 months on its lees, adding depth, structure and a lightly savoury feel.

The result is fresh, detailed and ready to enjoy, with pear, quince, citrus, orange blossom, sea salt and a subtle ginger note. It has enough texture for richer seafood and poultry, but the finish stays crisp, mineral and precise. This is not a simple fruity Chenin; it is a poised, food-loving white with real Cape South Coast character and the balance to develop further in bottle.
