2022 ‘Carra’ Pic Saint-Loup, Château de Lascaux

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Garrigue Stone

Château de Lascaux’s 2022 Carra is classic Pic Saint-Loup: dark, fragrant and full of southern French character, but with a freshness that keeps the wine beautifully poised. Syrah leads the way with blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, liquorice and black pepper, while Grenache and Mourvèdre add red fruit, wild herbs, black olive and a savoury, smoky edge.

On the palate, it is generous and expressive, with supple tannins, ripe black fruit and a lovely garrigue lift. The 2022 vintage brings warmth and spice, but the wine never feels heavy. Instead, it finishes with pepper, cade, black olive and a clean limestone freshness that makes it feel both satisfying and sharply defined.

For when
A roast lamb dinner needs something sunlit, savoury and quietly serious.

Pairs with
Rack of lamb with rosemary, lamb tagine, grilled sausages, beef stew, ratatouille, Provençal vegetables, mushroom dishes, tapas or aged hard cheeses

Château de Lascaux is one of Pic Saint-Loup’s most reliable names, rooted in the wild, limestone-rich landscape north of Montpellier. The Cavalier family has farmed here for generations, with Jean-Benoît Cavalier guiding the estate towards organic and biodynamic viticulture. Carra takes its name from an old word linked to stone and garrigue, a fitting tribute to the calcareous soils and aromatic scrubland that shape this confident, deeply regional red.

Château de Lascaux is a family estate in Vacquières, in the heart of Pic Saint-Loup, one of the Languedoc’s most distinctive and increasingly respected appellations. The Cavalier family has deep roots in the area, with Jean-Benoît Cavalier taking over in 1984 and developing the domaine into a benchmark for expressive, terroir-led southern French wines. Today, the estate is known for bringing freshness, balance and aromatic detail to a region often associated simply with warmth and power.

The vineyards sit among limestone, garrigue and the first foothills of the Cévennes, where Mediterranean sunshine is tempered by cooler inland influences. Château de Lascaux has been farmed organically since 2006, with biodynamic practices introduced later to support soil life, biodiversity and balance in the vines. The wines are generous but never clumsy, showing supple tannins, savoury herbs and the mineral freshness that makes Pic Saint-Loup such a compelling source of Syrah-led reds.

Carra 2022 is an AOC Pic Saint-Loup red made from Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre grown on soils formed from the breakdown of calcareous rocks, including older Jurassic limestone. It is a blend of 60% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre.

The grapes are harvested by hand or machine depending on the plot, then fully destemmed. Vinification is traditional, with temperature control and an extended maceration in concrete tanks. The wine is aged for a minimum of 12 months in concrete, preserving fruit purity and the savoury limestone character rather than adding overt oak.

The 2022 harvest started very early after a hot, dry summer, though storms in mid-August helped restart ripening. Jean-Benoît Cavalier noted that the reds showed a particularly spicy, garrigue-led character, a hallmark of the estate that was especially pronounced in this vintage.
