2022 Côtes de Provence Rouge, Château La Mascaronne
Provence, France
Château La Mascaronne’s 2022 Côtes de Provence Rouge is a reminder that Provence does not live by rosé alone. This is a dark, polished and quietly serious red, led by Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, with black cherry, cassis, plum, sweet spice, cocoa, vanilla and a fine peppery lift. It has the warmth of the south, but also the shape and freshness that make it feel elegant rather than heavy.
On the palate, it is structured and generous, with ripe black fruit, velvety tannins and a smooth, spicy finish. The Cabernet brings backbone and dark fruit, while Syrah adds perfume, pepper and savoury depth. It is a beautifully judged Provençal red for drinking now, but with enough structure to develop over the next few years.
For when
The grill is hot, the evening is long, and rosé has already had its turn.
Pairs with
Grilled ribeye, lamb cutlets, Provençal beef stew, wild boar ragù, charcuterie, roast peppers, mushroom dishes, ratatouille or aged hard cheeses.
Château La Mascaronne is one of Provence’s most compelling modern estates, set in the hills around Le Luc on a preserved, amphitheatre-like site. Now under the ownership of Michel Reybier, the force behind Bordeaux icon Château Cos d’Estournel, the estate has gained a sharper fine-wine identity while retaining its organic Provençal soul. This red shows the more serious side of La Mascaronne: structured, polished and full of southern character.
