2022 Côtes de Provence Rouge, Château La Mascaronne

Provence, France

Château La Mascaronne’s 2022 Côtes de Provence Rouge is a reminder that Provence does not live by rosé alone. This is a dark, polished and quietly serious red, led by Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, with black cherry, cassis, plum, sweet spice, cocoa, vanilla and a fine peppery lift. It has the warmth of the south, but also the shape and freshness that make it feel elegant rather than heavy.

On the palate, it is structured and generous, with ripe black fruit, velvety tannins and a smooth, spicy finish. The Cabernet brings backbone and dark fruit, while Syrah adds perfume, pepper and savoury depth. It is a beautifully judged Provençal red for drinking now, but with enough structure to develop over the next few years.

For when
The grill is hot, the evening is long, and rosé has already had its turn.

Pairs with
Grilled ribeye, lamb cutlets, Provençal beef stew, wild boar ragù, charcuterie, roast peppers, mushroom dishes, ratatouille or aged hard cheeses.

Château La Mascaronne is one of Provence’s most compelling modern estates, set in the hills around Le Luc on a preserved, amphitheatre-like site. Now under the ownership of Michel Reybier, the force behind Bordeaux icon Château Cos d’Estournel, the estate has gained a sharper fine-wine identity while retaining its organic Provençal soul. This red shows the more serious side of La Mascaronne: structured, polished and full of southern character.

Château La Mascaronne is an esteemed organic estate nestled in the heart of Provence, renowned for producing expressive and balanced wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. Situated in the village of Le Luc, the estate encompasses 60 hectares of vineyards planted on clay-limestone soils at elevations around 300 meters. This distinctive terroir, combined with meticulous vineyard management and a commitment to organic farming practices since 2016, contributes to the exceptional quality of their wines.
In 2020, Château La Mascaronne was acquired by Michel Reybier, owner of Bordeaux’s Cos d’Estournel, who was captivated by the estate’s potential and the quality of its wines. Reybier’s vision for La Mascaronne is to highlight its remarkable terroir through a quest for excellence common to all his wine estates.

The 2022 Côtes de Provence Rouge is made from Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on Château La Mascaronne’s organic hillside vineyards around Le Luc. The estate’s elevated parcels and amphitheatre-like setting help preserve freshness, while Provence’s sunshine brings ripeness, colour and aromatic intensity. The result is a red with both southern warmth and a more structured, ageworthy frame.

Fruit is selected carefully, with the red cuvée built around dark-fruited concentration, spice and supple tannic structure. After fermentation, part of the wine spends time in French oak, adding polish, gentle vanilla and cocoa notes without overwhelming the fruit. The 2022 vintage gives a deep, generous style, with ripe black fruit, sweet spice, pepper and velvety tannins. It is enjoyable now with food, but its structure should allow it to develop well over the next five years.
