2022 'Bull Ant' Shiraz, Lake Breeze

Langhorne Creek, Australia

This is Langhorne Creek Shiraz with plenty of dark-fruited charm and a little bite of spice. Plum, blackberry and black cherry lead the nose, wrapped in chocolate, black pepper, earthy spice and a subtle black olive note. It feels generous and full, but the cooling influence of Lake Alexandrina gives the wine enough freshness to keep it lively.

On the palate, it is rich, smooth and satisfying, with ripe black fruit, soft tannins and a long, rounded finish. There is enough depth for steak, enough softness for easy drinking, and enough savoury spice to keep things interesting. A brilliant value Australian Shiraz for anyone who wants comfort, flavour and proper regional character in the same glass.

Bull Ant is Lake Breeze’s approachable, great-value range, made from fruit grown on the Follett family vineyard in Langhorne Creek. The label may be playful, but the wine is serious about over-delivering: ripe fruit, polished texture and a proper sense of place. Lake Breeze is one of Langhorne Creek’s great family producers, with the Follett family farming grapes in the region since the 1880s. The estate sits close to Lake Alexandrina, where cooling breezes help moderate the South Australian warmth and allow grapes to ripen steadily while retaining freshness.

Winemaker Greg Follett is the fourth generation of the family to work on the property. After studying at Roseworthy and gaining experience in California and southern France, he returned home and began building Lake Breeze into one of Australia’s most reliable boutique wineries. The estate has earned a strong reputation for generous, fruit-driven wines that combine depth, polish and excellent value.

The Bull Ant range captures the more immediate side of Lake Breeze. It is made for pleasure first: approachable, richly flavoured and food-friendly, while still carrying the regional signatures that make Langhorne Creek so appealing. For customers, this is dependable Australian red wine with charm, comfort and real character.

The 2022 'Bull Ant' Shiraz is 100% Shiraz from Langhorne Creek, South Australia. Fruit comes from the Follett family vineyard, where the cooling influence of nearby Lake Alexandrina helps preserve freshness in a region known for generous, full-flavoured reds.

The grapes were fermented on their skins for seven days in small open fermenters. Regular rack-and-return work and pump-overs helped build colour, flavour and soft structure. The wine was then matured in French and American oak for 16 months, adding chocolate, spice and roundness while keeping the dark fruit at the centre.

Now ready to enjoy, this is smooth, ripe and generous, with plum, blackberry, pepper and earthy chocolate notes carried by soft tannins. It has enough richness for hearty food, but the freshness and polished texture make it easy to open any night of the week. Alcohol is 14.5%, and the wine is vegan.
