2022 Botmaskop, Delaire Graff
Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa
Cassis and blackberry rise from the glass, layered with liquorice, violet, cedar and dark spice. A subtle earthy, mineral note gives the wine extra definition, balancing its generous Stellenbosch fruit with a more classical, composed personality.
Full-bodied and concentrated, with silky dark fruit framed by fine, persistent tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and length, Cabernet Franc brings perfume and freshness, while Petit Verdot adds colour, spice and intensity. Polished French oak supports a long, savoury finish without overwhelming the fruit. Impressive now with food, but built to develop beautifully over the next decade.
For when: The best steak calls for a bottle with proper presence.
Pairs with: Fillet steak, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, venison, beef Wellington, mushroom pie or mature hard cheeses.
The namesake of this wine is the historic mountain peak upon which Delaire Graff Estate is situated. Originally named Bootmanskop, meaning ‘Boat Man’s Peak’, the picturesque Botmaskop mountain, with its expansive views over the Cape Peninsula and the Atlantic Ocean, served as the lookout point for the Huguenots who had settled in nearby Franschhoek. From this vantage point, sailing ships entering Table Bay harbour 50 kilometres to the west were easily seen.
