2021 Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore, Corte Lavel, Marion

Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy

Marion’s 2021 Corte Lavel Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore is Valpolicella with extra depth, but still the estate’s trademark freshness and lift. It opens with black cherry, blueberry, raspberry, dried violet, sweet spice and a lovely woodland note of moss, earth and herbs. There is richness here, but it never feels heavy or overworked.

On the palate, it is plush, rounded and savoury, with dark berry fruit wrapped in smooth tannins and a chalky mineral edge. The Ripasso method brings more colour, body and gentle sweetness of fruit, while the wine keeps the brightness that makes Valpolicella so useful at the table. A generous, quietly serious red with polish, charm and enough structure for proper food.

For when
A cosy Italian dinner needs something richer than Valpolicella, but fresher than Amarone.

Pairs with
Wild boar ragù, roast pork, grilled sausages, mushroom risotto, braised beef, roast lamb, hard cheeses, salami or aubergine parmigiana.

Marion is one of Valpolicella’s most admired small family estates, run by Stefano and Nicoletta Campedelli in the Marcellise valley east of Verona. Corte Lavel is a particularly characterful part of the story, giving a Ripasso that feels full and mineral, with the kind of dark fruit, earth and soft herbal complexity that makes Marion’s wines so quietly compelling.

Marion is a small, family-run estate in the Marcellise valley, east of Verona, and one of the most distinctive names just outside the Valpolicella Classico zone. The property was bought by the Campedelli family in 1986 and is run by Stefano Campedelli with his wife Nicoletta, with the next generation now involved in both vineyard work and winemaking. The estate is based around a 15th-century villa once linked to the Counts Marioni, from whom Marion takes its name.

What makes Marion so appealing is its balance of generosity and grace. The wines have the depth and ripeness people love in Veneto reds, but they avoid heaviness, keeping freshness, soft tannins and a clear sense of place. The estate’s limestone-rich soils and careful vineyard work give the wines their mineral line, while the family’s patient cellar approach brings texture and polish. Marion has become a quiet cult name among those who want Valpolicella with character, seriousness and real drinkability.

Corte Lavel is made in the Ripasso style, where Valpolicella wine is passed over the skins and pomace left from Amarone production. This second contact adds body, colour, texture and a deeper savoury character, giving the wine more richness than standard Valpolicella while keeping a fresher profile than Amarone.

The wine is based on traditional Valpolicella varieties, with Corvina and Rondinella at the core. The Corte Lavel vineyard is associated with a fuller, more mineral expression, marked by dark berry fruit, forest notes and a chalky edge. Marion’s vineyards lie in the Marcellise valley, on predominantly limestone and chalk-influenced soils, a key part of the estate’s freshness and longevity.

The 2021 vintage in Valpolicella produced reds with good ripeness, structure and freshness. For this bottle, the style is plush and full-bodied, with dark fruits, herbs, earth and supple tannins, making it a natural bridge between bright Valpolicella and the richer world of Amarone.
