2021 The Holy Trinity GSM, Grant Burge

Barossa Valley, Australia

Red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant lead the aromas, joined by blueberry, rose, bramble and a twist of aniseed. Dried herbs, dark spice and a faint earthy note sit beneath the fruit, giving this cooler-vintage Barossa red an especially fragrant and energetic personality.

Juicy and beautifully balanced, with bright acidity running through red and blue fruit. The tannins are fine, velvety and persistent, bringing structure without obscuring the wine’s freshness. This is The Holy Trinity at its most lifted and precise, delicious now but with the concentration and shape to develop further in bottle.

For when: Sunday lunch stretches comfortably into the evening.

Pairs with: Duck confit, herb-roasted lamb, roast chicken, spiced cauliflower steak or mushroom and lentil Wellington.

Grant Burge draws on five generations of Barossa history and an impressive collection of mature vineyard sites. The Holy Trinity is a longstanding regional benchmark for Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre, and the 2021 captures the blend with unusual brightness, definition and finesse.

Grant Burge has been part of the modern Barossa story since 1988, but the family’s roots in the region extend through five generations. Meshach Burge began making wine in 1865, and that long connection with the land helped establish a producer now recognised for generous, distinctly Barossa wines.

The range draws on vineyards across the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Warmer, lower sites provide depth and ripe fruit, while higher vineyards contribute freshness and aromatic definition. Important sources include Filsell, Chaff Mill, Corryton Park and Lily Farm, alongside parcels of mature and old vines that give the premium wines their concentration and authority.

Chief winemaker Craig Stansborough has worked with Grant Burge since 1993. His style respects the Barossa’s natural richness while seeking fragrance, balance and tannin that feels polished rather than heavy. The Holy Trinity is one of the clearest expressions of that philosophy. Grenache supplies perfume and red fruit, Shiraz brings body and darker flavour, and Mourvèdre adds spice and savoury structure. The 2021 release shows the blend at its most energetic and refined, making it equally appealing for drinking now or keeping in the cellar. It is a confident, highly rated Barossa red from a producer with proven regional knowledge.

Made from Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre grown entirely in the Barossa Valley. The fruit was predominantly hand-picked from old, dry-grown vines between 50 and 120 years old, including Grenache vines around 80 years of age.

The cooler 2021 season produced fruit with excellent brightness, natural freshness and an extended ripening period. Each component was assessed separately before the final blend was assembled. The wine was matured entirely in seasoned French oak puncheons and larger foudres, allowing the fruit and spice to remain at the centre of the finished wine. Bottled under screw cap at 14.5% ABV.
