2021 Taurasi DOCG, Feudi di San Gregorio
Taurasi, Campania, Italy
Volcanic Velvet
Feudi di San Gregorio’s 2021 Taurasi is Aglianico in its noble southern Italian form: deep, structured and full of dark, fragrant intensity. It opens with Maraschino cherry, blackberry, plum, cinnamon, nutmeg and black pepper, with undertones of vanilla, anise, leather and balsamic herbs giving it a brooding, savoury depth.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with juicy black fruit wrapped in ripe, soft tannins. There is power here, but it is measured rather than heavy, with oak polish, volcanic freshness and an aromatic, persistent finish. A serious Campanian red with enough structure for the cellar, but enough generosity to enjoy now with proper food.
For when
A long Sunday roast needs a red with depth, history and a little southern Italian drama.
Pairs with
Roast lamb, beef shin, wild boar ragù, grilled sausages, aubergine parmigiana, aged pecorino, mushroom pasta or slow-cooked pork.
If this wine were…
A black velvet coat dusted with volcanic ash.
Feudi di San Gregorio is one of Campania’s defining modern estates, based in Sorbo Serpico in the heart of Irpinia. Taurasi is Aglianico’s great stronghold, where volcanic, sandstone and marl soils, altitude and mountain air give the grape its depth, tannic structure and unmistakable freshness. This is the estate’s classic Taurasi: polished, powerful and rooted in one of southern Italy’s most historic wine landscapes.
