2021 Ribera del Duero Origen de Resalte, Bodegas Resalte

Ribera del Duero, Spain

Or as we call it, Velvet Origin

Dark, polished and full of Ribera del Duero confidence, Origen de Resalte shows Tempranillo with both power and precision. Blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum sit alongside liquorice, cedar, cocoa, sweet spice and a cool balsamic lift. It has the generosity expected from the region, but the 2021 vintage gives it freshness, fluency and a more elegant line.

On the palate, it is full-bodied, smooth and structured, with ripe tannins, dark fruit and a long, savoury finish. The oak is well folded into the wine, bringing polish and spice without overwhelming the fruit. This is a strong buy for customers who want a serious Ribera del Duero that feels modern, generous and ready for grilled meats, rich stews or a proper Sunday roast.

For when: A dinner with roast meat or slow cooking needs a Spanish red with depth, polish and authority.

Pairs with: Ribeye steak, roast lamb, beef cheeks, chorizo stew, grilled mushrooms, hard cheeses, morcilla or smoky aubergine.

Origen de Resalte matters because it is built to show Ribera del Duero through several different villages rather than one single site. The result is a complete, layered Tempranillo with the region’s dark fruit and firm structure, but also enough freshness and balance to make it highly drinkable.

Bodegas Resalte was founded in 2000 in Peñafiel, one of the symbolic heartlands of Ribera del Duero. From the beginning, the project has focused on showing the full potential of Tempranillo through careful vineyard selection, modern precision and respect for traditional methods.

The winery works with selected vineyards across the denomination, using different soils, altitudes and exposures to build complexity into the wines. Rather than treating Ribera del Duero as one uniform style, Resalte looks for nuance between villages and parcels, then vinifies and ages components separately to protect their individual character.

Customers should trust Resalte because the wines combine the richness people expect from Ribera del Duero with a clean, polished and contemporary feel. The house style is dark-fruited, structured and generous, but not clumsy. Origen de Resalte is a particularly useful bottle in the range because it delivers the region’s depth, oak polish and dinner-table strength while staying balanced, fresh and approachable.

The 2021 Origen de Resalte is made from 100% Tempranillo, sourced from vineyards more than 30 years old across six different villages in Ribera del Duero. Yields are kept below 4,500kg per hectare, and the range of soils, altitudes and exposures brings complexity to the final blend.

The grapes are hand-harvested in 15kg boxes and selected on arrival at the winery. After destemming, the fruit is not crushed. Vinification is carried out by gravity, using OVI tanks to avoid aggressive pumping, with a total maceration of around 18 days. Each origin is made and aged separately before blending. The wine spends 14 months in oak barrels, 80% French and 20% American, with rackings every four months, followed by a further four months in tank and then bottle ageing. It is bottled unfiltered, contains sulphites and is listed at 14.5% alcohol.

Now with a little bottle age, the wine shows ripe blackberry, plum, cedar, cocoa and sweet spice, with tannins that feel polished but still properly Ribera. The 2021 vintage brings freshness and precision, so the wine has structure without heaviness. It is ready to drink now with rich food, while the depth, tannin and oak integration give it enough shape to continue developing.
