2021 Pinot Noir 'Clonal Selection', Kershaw

Western Cape, South Africa

Elgin Reverie

Fragrant and finely composed, this Elgin Pinot Noir combines the charm of ripe berries with a savoury depth that gradually reveals itself in the glass. Raspberry, wild strawberry and red plum mingle with darker cherry notes, lifted by rose petals and a refreshing woodland character. Gentle coffee, delicate toast and sweet spice sit beneath the fruit, adding complexity while allowing the wine’s perfume to remain beautifully clear.

The palate has a lovely balance of succulent fruit and firm, finely textured tannins, with vibrant acidity bringing freshness and definition. Medium-bodied, it develops satisfying depth through the middle without losing its buoyancy, carrying red berries, subtle spice and savoury detail into a lingering finish. There is pleasure here now, particularly alongside food, and enough structure to reward patient cellaring. For lovers of expressive, thoughtfully made Pinot Noir, it offers an engaging combination of fragrance, substance and restraint.

For when: The roast is resting, and there’s time to let a beautiful Pinot unfold.

Pairs with: Roast duck with cherry jus, guinea fowl with thyme, pork fillet with mushroom cream, grilled salmon with puy lentils, wild mushroom risotto, or a beetroot and goat’s cheese tart.

Clonal Selection explores how carefully chosen forms of Pinot Noir respond to Elgin’s different vineyard sites. The components are vinified separately, allowing Richard Kershaw to assess their individual character before assembling the final blend. Fragrance, fruit, texture and freshness all play their part, creating a wine with the detail and harmony that define his approach.

The cool, extended 2021 season was particularly successful for Kershaw. Increased winter rainfall and a cool spring delayed growth, while slow ripening allowed tannins to mature evenly at relatively modest sugar levels. The resulting wines combine aromatic lift, bright acidity and finely developed structure.

British-born Richard Kershaw began his working life as a chef before pursuing a career in wine. Experience in California, Chile, Bordeaux, Hungary and Germany preceded his move to South Africa in 1999. He became a Master of Wine in 2011 and founded Kershaw Wines in 2012, initially concentrating on Chardonnay and Syrah before introducing Pinot Noir in 2015.

Elgin provides the cool growing conditions central to his work. Its elevated vineyards, mountain surroundings and maritime influence encourage gradual ripening and the retention of natural acidity. Differences in soil and exposure give individual parcels their own character, providing the building blocks for wines that balance fruit intensity with freshness.

Working alongside oenologist Dudley Wilson, Richard brings meticulous attention to vineyard selection, fermentation and maturation. Each combination of clone and soil is handled separately, with barrels chosen to complement the fruit. Regular tasting guides the final blends, producing wines distinguished by their precision, layered texture and carefully integrated oak.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir, using clones PN777 and PN115, selected from seven small Elgin parcels. Grapes were hand-picked between 26 February and 5 March 2021, then sorted and destemmed.

Uncrushed berries entered small, open-topped fermenters for a three-day maceration before spontaneous fermentation. Gentle drain-and-return extraction was used, with skin contact lasting 12–18 days. The remaining skins were basket-pressed, and the wine settled before gravity transfer to barrel.

Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel, followed by approximately ten to eleven months’ maturation. French oak from Burgundian coopers was used, with 25% new oak and 12.5% of the wine matured in breathable egg-shaped vessels. The wine was racked and lightly filtered before bottling.

Alcohol: 13.5%. Suitable for vegans. Recommended drinking window: 2024–2034.
