2021 Grenache Syrah, Creation

Walker Bay, South Africa

“The Spice Line”

This is a cool-climate Rhône-style red with a distinctly South African pulse. Ripe plum, blackberry and dark cherry lead the nose, wrapped in black pepper, tapenade, dried herbs, cocoa and a savoury umami edge. It has the depth and spice you want from Syrah, with Grenache bringing warmth, lift and a softer red-fruited glow.

On the palate, it is full-flavoured and supple, with ripe tannins, natural freshness and a long, peppery finish. The fruit is dark and generous, but the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge keeps the wine poised rather than heavy. A brilliant bottle for anyone who loves southern Rhône reds, but wants a cooler, more polished expression with freshness, savoury detail and real food appeal.

For when
A roast dinner needs spice, depth and comfort.

Pairs with
Roast lamb, grilled sausages, steak with pepper sauce, venison, mushroom pie, aubergine bake, lentil stew, black olive tapenade or aged hard cheeses.

Creation’s Grenache Syrah shows the estate’s ability to make Rhône varieties feel elegant and site-specific in the cool Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Grown on decomposed Bokkeveld shale and clay-loam soils, the wine balances ripe fruit with pepper, olive and savoury spice. It is polished, generous and quietly complex, offering a different side of Creation beyond its famous Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Creation is one of the standout estates of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, in South Africa’s Walker Bay region. Founded in 2002 by Swiss-born winemaker Jean-Claude Martin and South African Carolyn Martin, the estate was established on previously unplanted land high in the cool coastal hills near Hermanus.

The site has become known for wines with clarity, freshness and balance. Its vineyards sit on ancient Bokkeveld shale and clay-loam soils, with cooling maritime influence helping the grapes ripen slowly while preserving natural acidity. That combination gives Creation’s wines their signature feel: expressive, polished and full of energy, but never overblown.

While Creation is especially admired for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, its Rhône-style reds show the same careful thinking. The focus is on matching variety to site, farming with precision and making wines that work beautifully with food.

The 2021 Grenache Syrah is a blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache from Walker Bay, grown at around 270m elevation on decomposed Bokkeveld shale over clay-loam soils. The fruit was hand-harvested in April 2021 after a long ripening period, giving the wine both depth and freshness.

Fermentation took place in large foudres and stainless steel tanks. The wine was then matured for 14 months in French oak barrels, with 25% new wood and the balance in second and third-fill barrels, adding spice and structure without overwhelming the fruit.

The result is generous, savoury and ready to drink, with ripe plum, black pepper, tapenade and dark fruit carried by supple tannins and natural acidity. The oak has settled neatly into the wine, giving polish and depth while keeping the finish fresh and food-friendly. Alcohol is 14%.
