2021 Gaba do Xil Tinto Mencía, Telmo Rodríguez
Valdeorras, Galicia, Spain
Slate Bloom
This is Galician Mencía with freshness, perfume and a lovely wild-fruited edge. From Valdeorras, it opens with raspberry, red cherry, blackberry and plum, followed by violet, pepper, dried herbs, earth and a cool stony mineral line. It is bright and aromatic rather than heavy, with that Atlantic Spanish energy that makes Mencía so compelling.
The palate is juicy, fresh and finely balanced, with red and black fruit carried by lively acidity and soft, delicate tannins. There is a savoury, slightly earthy edge beneath the fruit, giving the wine more character than its easy-drinking frame suggests. No heavy oak, no over-extraction, just pure fruit, herbs, slate and lift.
For when you want red wine with freshness, fragrance and a little Galician mountain charm.
Pairs with roast chicken, pork belly, lamb chops, mushroom rice, charcuterie, grilled aubergine, lentils with chorizo, or hard sheep’s cheese.
If this wine were… a flower, it would be a dark violet growing between cool stones.
Telmo Rodríguez is one of the defining figures of modern Spanish wine, working with Pablo Eguzkiza to revive historic vineyards, native grapes and regional traditions across Spain. In Valdeorras, their Ladeiras do Xil project focuses on steep Galician vineyards and local varieties, especially Godello and Mencía. Gaba do Xil Tinto is made from 100% Mencía, sourced from Larouco and Santa Cruz, including sites such as A Torgueira, O Barreiro, Valerio and Val. The wine is harvested by hand, fermented with native yeasts and matured for 12 months in stainless steel, preserving its freshness, fruit purity and slate-soil character.
