2021 'Flint Fields' Blanc de Noirs, Simpsons Wine Estate

Kent, United Kingdom and England

Simpsons’ 2021 Flint Fields Blanc de Noirs is top-tier English sparkling with real presence: burnished gold in the glass, finely beaded and beautifully poised. Made from estate-grown Pinot Noir, it opens with vanilla cream, fine pastry, toasted brioche and fresh Alpine strawberry, with a little red apple, honeyed citrus and chalky brightness underneath.

On the palate, it is dry, elegant and quietly luxurious, with creamy texture balanced by crisp Kentish freshness. The Pinot Noir brings depth and savoury weight, while extended lees ageing adds toast, pastry and a smooth, persistent finish. This is serious English fizz with polish, generosity and a lovely sense of celebration.

For when
The occasion calls for Champagne energy, but with a distinctly English signature.

Pairs with
Smoked salmon, crab, scallops, fried chicken, roast poultry, sushi, lobster rolls, Comté or delicate canapés.

Simpsons Wine Estate is based in the Elham Valley in Kent, where Charles and Ruth Simpson have helped define the new confidence of English wine. Their vineyards sit on the lime-rich chalk ridge that runs through southern England and on towards Champagne and Burgundy, with south-facing slopes and coastal influence bringing ripeness, freshness and balance. Flint Fields comes from estate-grown Pinot Noir on these chalk soils, showing why the North Downs have become one of England’s most exciting sparkling wine landscapes.

Charles and Ruth Simpson have been making award-winning wines in the South of France since 2002. In 2012, attracted by the quality of the terroir and the opportunity to become part of one of the most dynamic wine-producing regions in the world, they brought their expertise back to the UK, establishing Simpsons Wine Estate. Aspiring to produce the finest quality English wine, they planted 30 hectares of vineyards on the iconic chalk terroir of the North Downs and built a state-of-the-art gravity-fed winery. In 2016, the Simpsons saw their first harvest. With a strong focus on provenance, they produce a highly-acclaimed range of exclusively estate-grown still and sparkling wines, including the Chalklands Classic Cuvée 2016, which won a gold medal in the 2019 Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships.

On their French wine estate, the award-winning Domaine Sainte Rose in the Languedoc region, the Simpsons have always pursued the cleaner, truer flavours of the grape, and are now bringing this savoir-faire to their English vineyards. With rootstock meticulously matched to the soil and a new world-class winery just minutes from the vines, quality is the watchword.

Clone 115 was selected to create a more full-bodied style owing to a slight accentuation of tannins, developing into a more luxurious texture. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks where it underwent malolactic conversion and spent three months on its lees imparting a creamy mouth-feel. The wines were blended and bottled to obtain the ‘prise de mousse’. After the secondary bottle fermentation was complete, maturation on the lees lasted two years prior to disgorgement in June 2019, followed by six months ageing on cork.
