2021 Chardonnay 'Las Secuoyas Vineyard', Bodegas Salentein

Mendoza, Argentina

This is high-altitude Argentine Chardonnay with freshness, texture and a cool mineral edge. White peach, green apple and citrus peel lead the nose, lifted by white flowers, meadow herbs, lemon zest and a subtle touch of blossom honey. It feels polished and complex, but the character stays precise rather than rich for richness’ sake.

On the palate, it is elegant, layered and persistent, with white fruit, citrus drive and a chalky, saline finish. The cool San Pablo site gives the wine its tension and lift, while gentle oak ageing brings quiet depth and shape. A brilliant Chardonnay for drinkers who love Burgundy-style freshness, but want something more Andean, distinctive and quietly luxurious.

For when
Roast chicken needs a Chardonnay with altitude and finesse.

Pairs with
Roast chicken, butter-poached lobster, scallops, grilled white fish, lemon pasta, mushroom risotto, roast cauliflower, Comté or soft creamy cheeses.

Las Secuoyas is one of Salentein’s standout high-altitude vineyards in San Pablo, Uco Valley, named after two rare sequoia trees that give the site its identity. Sitting around 1,600m above sea level, the vineyard combines cool conditions, wide day-to-night temperature shifts and calcium-rich stony soils. That makes this Chardonnay feel fresh, mineral and finely shaped, with real vineyard character behind the polish.

Bodegas Salentein is one of the key names behind the modern rise of Mendoza’s Uco Valley. Founded by Dutch entrepreneur Mijndert Pon, the estate helped bring serious attention to high-altitude viticulture in this dramatic part of Argentina, where vineyards sit close to the Andes and benefit from intense sunlight, cool nights and mountain-fed irrigation.

The winery is based in Tunuyán and works across some of the valley’s most important high-altitude sites, producing wines that combine ripe Argentine fruit with freshness, structure and a strong sense of place. Salentein is also known for its striking architecture, gravity-led winery design and broader cultural vision, including art, hospitality and regional food.

While Malbec remains central to Mendoza’s identity, Salentein has shown how impressive cool-climate Chardonnay can be in sites such as San Pablo. Las Secuoyas is a particularly clear example: refined, mineral and expressive, with the altitude giving the wine energy and precision.

The 2021 Las Secuoyas Chardonnay is 100% Chardonnay from Salentein’s estate-owned Las Secuoyas vineyard in San Pablo, Uco Valley. The vineyard sits at around 1,600m above sea level, where the cool climate, high humidity and wide day-to-night temperature differences help preserve acidity and aromatic detail.

The vineyard was planted with Chardonnay in 2002 and is sustainably managed. Its sandy, well-structured soils contain large calcium carbonate stones and gypsum below the surface, giving the wine its chalky mineral feel.
