2021 Chardonnay 'G.P.S Series', Kershaw

Western Cape, South Africa

Limestone Latitude

Richly textured yet beautifully defined, this Chardonnay combines generous fruit with the refreshing mineral character that makes Kershaw’s whites so compelling. Lemon blossom, ripe pear and peach unfold alongside orange peel and a delicate tropical hint, with notes of oatmeal, lemon biscuit and gentle oak spice adding depth. A chalky undertone runs beneath the fruit, bringing a savoury edge to its inviting aromas.

The palate opens with a rounded, almost creamy generosity before bright acidity draws everything into focus. Citrus peel brings a pleasing pithiness through the middle, balancing the ripe fruit and giving the wine an appetising sense of grip. Oak is woven into the texture, supporting a long finish of lemon cream, grapefruit and mineral freshness. There is plenty to enjoy now, especially as it opens alongside food, while its concentration and balance offer scope for further development. A distinctive South African Chardonnay for anyone drawn to whites with both richness and precision.

For when: A leisurely lunch becomes an excuse to open something rather special.

Pairs with: Roast turbot with lemon butter, lobster thermidor, scallops with celeriac purée, chicken with tarragon cream, grilled pork loin with sage, or a wild mushroom and Parmesan tart.

G.P.S. stands for Grape Positioning System, Richard Kershaw’s exploration of exceptional vineyard sites beyond his Elgin base. This Chardonnay comes from a single block in Lower Duivenhoks River, where he discovered an unusual pocket of limestone soils in 2016. The site offered an opportunity to explore Chardonnay’s affinity with limestone, producing a wine that balances generous texture with a distinctive chalky freshness.

British-born Richard Kershaw began his career as a chef before moving into wine, working in California, Chile, Bordeaux, Hungary and Germany before settling in South Africa in 1999. He became a Master of Wine in 2011 and established Kershaw Wines the following year, initially focusing on Chardonnay and Syrah before adding Pinot Noir to the range.

Elgin remains the heart of the business, with its elevated vineyards and cool conditions providing the foundation for wines of freshness and detail. The G.P.S. Series takes Richard’s curiosity further afield, seeking out individual sites with distinctive growing conditions. Lower Duivenhoks River’s limestone vineyard is a particularly intriguing example, offering a different expression of Chardonnay from his Elgin bottlings.

Working with oenologist Dudley Wilson, Richard combines restrained winemaking with meticulous attention to vineyard selection and maturation. Barrel choices are carefully matched to the fruit, and regular tasting guides the development of each wine. His approach brings technical understanding and a practical feel for balance together, producing whites with depth, individuality and finely integrated oak.

Made from 100% Chardonnay, Dijon clone CY95, sourced from a single vineyard block in Lower Duivenhoks River. Grapes were hand-picked on 27 February 2021 and transported in small baskets.

Whole bunches were gently pressed, and the unsettled juice flowed by gravity directly into barrels. Fermentation began spontaneously without added yeast or enzymes and continued until dry. Malolactic fermentation was discouraged.

The wine matured for eleven months in French oak from Burgundian coopers, with 56% new oak. Sulphur was added after the initial four months, followed by seven further months of maturation before racking, blending and bottling. Production totalled 2,660 bottles.

Alcohol: 13.5%. Suitable for vegans.
