2021 Brunello di Montalcino, Carpineto

Tuscany, Italy

Commanding and deeply aromatic, this Brunello combines generous Tuscan fruit with the freshness of Carpineto’s high vineyards. Black cherry, ripe plum and blackberry unfold alongside juniper, dried sage and bay leaf, with liquorice and warm spice adding depth. Subtle vanilla and cedar weave through the fruit, while a savoury mineral edge gives the bouquet a wonderfully composed, classical character.

The palate is substantial and warming, with concentrated fruit wrapped in firm, chalky tannins. Bright acidity brings definition to the richness, carrying flavours of cherry, pomegranate and plum towards a lingering finish of spice, cocoa and dried herbs. There is plenty to enjoy with a generous meal and time in a decanter, although its structure makes a persuasive case for patience. A bottle to lay down for a future occasion, when its layers can unfold more fully.

For when: Sunday lunch deserves a long afternoon and the best glasses.

Pairs with: Pair with bistecca alla fiorentina, rosemary-roasted lamb shoulder, wild boar pappardelle, braised beef cheeks, porcini and chestnut ragù, or mature Pecorino Toscano.

The red dragon on Carpineto’s label recalls the estate’s old name, Forteto del Drago, or Dragon’s Fort. Local legend tells of a fearsome creature living in the surrounding woodland, eventually revealed to be an unusually large porcupine. Today, those woods frame one of Montalcino’s highest estates, where the vineyards climb beyond 500 metres.

Carpineto began in 1967 in Dudda, near Greve in Chianti, when Giovanni Carlo Sacchet and Antonio Mario Zaccheo joined forces to produce outstanding Tuscan wine. Their families continue to run the business, which now encompasses five estates across Tuscany. Sangiovese remains central to its identity, supported by a longstanding commitment to careful vineyard selection and wines that develop gracefully with age.

The Montalcino property occupies a rocky ridge less than three kilometres west of the town. Its 53 hectares include around ten hectares of Sangiovese Grosso vineyards, surrounded by woodland and rooted in galestro and clay. Altitude, ventilation and a slightly northerly exposure encourage a long ripening season, with these vineyards typically among the later sites harvested in the appellation.

Winemaker Caterina Sacchet continues her father’s work, combining technical precision with respect for the character of each estate. Sustainable cultivation, dry farming at Montalcino and an emphasis on restrained yields underpin the approach. Extended maturation is equally important, giving Carpineto’s structured reds time to develop before release.

Made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grown on Carpineto’s Montalcino estate. The elevated vineyards, galestro and clay soils, and surrounding Mediterranean woodland contribute to the wine’s aromatic intensity and fresh structure.

Vinification involves fermentation under temperature control, with a medium-length maceration on the skins to extract colour, flavour and tannin.

The wine matures for three years in Slavonian oak casks of varying capacities, followed by at least six months in bottle in temperature-controlled cellars. This extended ageing begins to integrate the structure while preserving the fruit and capacity for further development.

Alcohol: 15%. Recommended drinking: from 2029.
