2021 Art Series Chardonnay, Leeuwin Estate

Margaret River, Australia

Chamomile, lemon myrtle and cherry blossom lead an intricate aroma, with white nectarine, pear and lemon flesh beneath. Flint, chalk and graphite bring mineral definition, while ginger, nutmeg and almond meal add quiet richness. Powerful yet beautifully controlled, it reveals more with every turn of the glass.

Lime and nashi pear drive the palate, carried by vibrant acidity and a fine saline current. The texture is precise and finely layered, with wet stone, citrus peel and perfectly integrated oak stretching across an exceptionally long finish. It is young, taut and built to evolve, but a generous decant reveals why Art Series is considered one of Australia’s great Chardonnays.

For when: You want the white wine to be the main event.

Pairs with: Butter-poached lobster, roast turbot, grilled scallops, chicken with tarragon or a truffle and mushroom risotto.

Leeuwin Estate is one of Margaret River’s founding wineries and Art Series Chardonnay is its defining wine. First brought to international attention in the early 1980s, it combines concentrated estate fruit with meticulous barrel work and remarkable ageing potential. The 2021 label features Jo Davenport’s painting When Skies Are Blue.

Leeuwin Estate is one of the defining names of Margaret River and a producer whose wines helped establish the region on the world stage. Founded in the early 1970s by Denis and Tricia Horgan, the estate rose to prominence through a close connection with Robert Mondavi, who recognised the site’s potential and encouraged the family to pursue fine wine production. Since then, Leeuwin has become especially celebrated for Chardonnay, with the Art Series range achieving international acclaim, while the wider portfolio continues to show the estate’s hallmark balance of purity, precision and quiet power.

What makes Leeuwin so compelling is the way it combines ambition with elegance. The family remains at the heart of the estate, and the wines are shaped by Margaret River’s maritime climate, which brings long ripening conditions and natural freshness, alongside a house style built on detail, finesse and longevity rather than excess. Across both the iconic flagship wines and the more approachable Prelude range, Leeuwin Estate has become a benchmark not just for Margaret River, but for Australian fine wine more broadly.

The 2021 is 100% Chardonnay from Leeuwin Estate’s Margaret River vineyards. A mild summer with few hot days preserved excellent natural acidity, while picking began on 25 February and continued over the following two weeks as individual parcels reached optimum ripeness.

Cool destemmed fruit received a period of skin contact and was combined with whole-bunch-pressed parcels. After settling for 12 to 36 hours, the juice was racked and inoculated for fermentation. All components were barrel fermented in new French oak barriques, with the lees stirred regularly, then matured in barrel for 11 months before blending, fining, cold stabilisation and bottling.

The finished wine has 13.5% alcohol, 7.39 g/l acidity and a pH of 3.18. Skim milk was used during fining, so this vintage is not suitable for vegans.
