2020 Viña Ardanza Reserva, La Rioja Alta *Jeroboam Gift Box*

Rioja Alta, Rioja, Spain

A magnificent Jeroboam (3L) of 2020 Viña Ardanza Reserva packed in a beautiful Gift Box.

Fragrant, poised and wonderfully generous, the 2020 Viña Ardanza brings the charm of classical Rioja to an impressive three-litre format. Red cherry, blueberry and redcurrant mingle with delicate floral notes and a balsamic freshness, while cedar, cocoa and toasted oak add depth. Clove, nutmeg and a twist of pepper unfold gradually, framing the fruit with the warm, savoury complexity that makes Ardanza so distinctive.

The palate is expansive yet beautifully balanced, with succulent fruit, polished tannins and refreshing acidity keeping every mouthful lively. There is a reassuring firmness beneath the supple texture, giving the wine shape and the promise of further development. Red berries and gentle oak spice linger through a long, harmonious finish. Decant for a celebratory dinner or put it away for a future occasion: presented in its gift box, this jeroboam holds the equivalent of four standard bottles and makes a thoughtful present for anyone who loves fine Rioja.

Viña Ardanza has been a cornerstone of La Rioja Alta’s reputation since the brand was registered in 1942. Its enduring appeal comes from the partnership between Tempranillo grown in Rioja Alta and Garnacha from La Pedriza in Rioja Oriental. Together, they combine structure, freshness and fragrant generosity, shaped by the house’s patient approach to American oak maturation.

Founded in 1890 by five Riojan and Basque families, La Rioja Alta is one of the great names of Haro’s historic Barrio de la Estación. Its first president, Doña Saturnina García Cid y Gárate, helped establish a business whose identity remains rooted in craftsmanship and patience. Across generations, its Reservas and Gran Reservas have become benchmarks for Rioja’s traditional style.

The estate draws on vineyards with contrasting soils, elevations and climatic influences. For Viña Ardanza, Tempranillo from the clay-limestone sites of Rioja Alta provides freshness and definition, while Garnacha from the deep, pebble-rich soils of La Pedriza contributes fragrant fruit and breadth. This combination of sites is central to the wine’s personality.

Winemaker Julio Sáenz oversees a meticulous approach that brings modern grape selection together with established cellar practices. The house maintains its own cooperage, and long maturation in American oak remains fundamental to its wines. Environmental work includes reducing vineyard treatments, conserving water and investing in renewable energy, supporting a philosophy built around the long-term health of the estate.

Made from 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. The Tempranillo comes from La Cuesta and Montecillo, with vines over 30 years old. Garnacha is grown at La Pedriza in Tudelilla, at approximately 550 metres. Hand harvesting began in late September, with the Garnacha picked 20 days later.

Bunches were selected in the vineyard and transported under refrigeration, followed by optical sorting at the winery. The destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel, with alcoholic and malolactic fermentations completed naturally.

Selected lots entered American oak barrels in April 2021, with 20% new oak used. Tempranillo matured for 36 months with six manual rackings; Garnacha spent 30 months in barrel with five rackings. The final blend was bottled in November 2024.

Alcohol: 14.5%. Residual sugar: 2.1g/L. Total acidity: 5.7g/L. pH: 3.57. Recommended drinking window: 2026–2040.
