2020 Saperavi Classical, Vachnadziani Winery

Kakheti, Georgia

The Kakheti Black Silk Red

This is Georgian red wine with depth, polish and a dark-fruited pulse. Made from Saperavi grown in Kakheti, it opens with wild berries, blackberry, plum and cassis, before spice, toast, black pepper, smoke and earthy undertones begin to appear. It is deep in colour and generous in flavour, but there is a lovely elegance beneath the richness.

The palate is balanced, juicy and smooth, with ripe black fruit, plum, smoky spice and refined tannins leading into a pure, elegant finish. It has enough weight for winter cooking, but enough freshness to keep the glass lively and inviting.

For when you want a Georgian red with history, darkness and quiet sophistication.
Pairs with grilled lamb, beef stew, pork chops, mushroom khinkali, smoky aubergine, hard cheeses, or anything with garlic, herbs and char.
If this wine were… a fabric, it would be black silk laid over warm Kakheti stone, rich, smooth and catching a red glint in the light.

Vachnadziani Winery is one of Georgia’s historic producers, established in 1953 and based in Kakheti. The estate works across more than 1,000 hectares of vineyards in regions including Kakheti, Imereti, Racha and Lechkhumi, cultivating 25 grape varieties, most of them indigenous. Its modern identity is built around preserving Georgia’s ancient wine culture while combining it with renewed investment, contemporary cellars and careful winemaking.

Georgia is considered to be the ‘cradle of wine’, as 8,000 year-old indigenous Rkatsiteli grape seeds have been found in clay vessels. Vachnadziani was established in 1953 and is one of the oldest wineries in Georgia. During the Soviet years the vineyard fell into disrepair, but has since received significant investment. The aim is to preserve ancient wine culture while combining it with modern technology. With over 1,000 hectares of vineyard across Kakheti in eastern Georgia and Imereti, Racha and Lechkhumi in the west, Vachnadziani cultivates 25 vine varieties, the majority of which are indigenous, showcasing the character of this historic winemaking region.

The grapes were carefully sorted upon arrival to ensure only the highest quality fruit was vinified. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic conversion to soften the palate. 8% of the wine was aged in new French oak barrels for eight months.
