2020 Primitivo di Manduria Riserva 'Anniversario 62', San Marzano *Magnum*

Primitivo di Manduria, Puglia, Italy

A gift box of Magnums of the wonderful 2020 Primitivo di Manduria Riserva 'Anniversario 62' from San Marzano.

Deep, generous and immediately seductive, with aromas of ripe plum, black cherry conserve and sweet spice wrapped around tobacco, cocoa and vanilla. There is plenty of southern Italian warmth here, but also a polished, composed personality that keeps the richness beautifully controlled.

Full-bodied and velvety, with concentrated dark fruit, fine tannins and a long finish of coffee, chocolate and gentle spice. Its generous proportions feel especially fitting in magnum, making this an impressive bottle for sharing now, while the format also gives it excellent potential to develop further in the cellar.

For when: A long table, a slow feast and no hurry to leave.

Pairs with: Slow-braised beef, lamb shoulder, wild boar ragù, barbecued short ribs or mature Pecorino.

Anniversario 62 celebrates the year San Marzano was founded. Made from old bush-vine Primitivo grown between San Marzano and Sava, it captures the depth and warmth of Manduria while retaining the polish expected of the estate’s flagship Riserva. In this 1.5-litre format, it is a natural centrepiece for celebrations, generous dinners and serious Primitivo lovers.

San Marzano began in 1962, when 19 growers from the small Puglian town of San Marzano di San Giuseppe joined forces to create a winery capable of showing the true quality of their land. This was long before Primitivo di Manduria earned widespread international recognition, yet the founders understood the value of the region’s old vines, red soils and deeply rooted wine culture.

The estate has since grown into one of southern Italy’s most recognised names, combining generations of vineyard knowledge with precise, modern winemaking. Its identity remains closely tied to native Puglian grapes, particularly Primitivo, Negroamaro and Susumaniello, and to the traditional alberello bush vines that thrive in Manduria’s hot, dry climate.

San Marzano’s reputation was transformed by wines such as Sessantanni, which helped introduce a wider audience to the richness and character of old-vine Primitivo. Anniversario 62 builds on that legacy as a longer-aged Riserva created in honour of the winery’s founding year. Customers can trust the bottle for its clearly defined vineyard origins, meticulous production and consistently generous yet polished expression of Puglia.

Anniversario 62 is made from 100% Primitivo grown on selected old vineyards in the Valle del Sessantanni, around 40 hectares between San Marzano and Sava in the heart of the Primitivo di Manduria DOP. The bush vines are at least 60 years old and rooted in fine red loam rich in iron oxides, with a calcareous subsoil and scattered rock. The area has a hot, dry climate with a pronounced difference between daytime and night-time temperatures.

The grapes were picked by hand at advanced ripeness in mid-September. After destemming and crushing, the fruit underwent a cold soak at 8°C for 24 to 48 hours, followed by approximately ten days of temperature-controlled fermentation and maceration at 24 to 26°C using native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel before the wine matured for 18 months in French and American oak barrels.
