2020 Pinot Noir 'G.P.S Series', Kershaw

Western Cape, South Africa

Coastal Silk

Fragrant, graceful and quietly seductive, this Walker Bay Pinot Noir draws you in with red cherry, wild strawberry and cranberry, lifted by rose petals and a delicate twist of blood orange. As it opens, subtle herbal notes and earthy woodland nuances emerge beneath the fruit, alongside clove, gentle oak spice and a faint smoky mineral edge. There is lovely clarity to the aromas, with enough savoury detail to keep the glass continually interesting.

The palate is supple and beautifully balanced, combining juicy red fruit with fine, gently gripping tannins and refreshing acidity. Light to medium-bodied, it has a satisfying fullness through the middle while retaining an effortless sense of movement. Cherry skin, soft spice and a delicate saline impression linger on the finish. Approachable now, with the balance for further development, this is a Pinot to enjoy over an unhurried meal, particularly if you appreciate fragrance, finesse and flavour without excessive weight.

For when: Sunday lunch stretches into the afternoon, and nobody is in a hurry.

Pairs with: Roast duck with cherry sauce, chicken with wild mushrooms, pork tenderloin with sage, pan-fried salmon with lentils, mushroom pithivier, or roast guinea fowl with thyme.

G.P.S. stands for Grape Positioning System, Richard Kershaw’s exploration of distinctive vineyard sites beyond his Elgin base. This Pinot Noir brings together two parcels in Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, within Walker Bay. Discovered in 2018, their sheltered positions and Bokkeveld shale soils offered an opportunity to capture the perfume and savoury elegance for which this coastal region is celebrated.

British-born Richard Kershaw began his career as a chef before turning his attention to wine. Experience in California, Chile, Bordeaux, Hungary and Germany preceded his move to South Africa in 1999. He became a Master of Wine in 2011 and founded Kershaw Wines in 2012, initially making Chardonnay and Syrah before introducing Pinot Noir in 2015.

Elgin remains the centre of his work, with its cool conditions providing the foundation for wines of freshness and definition. The G.P.S. Series extends that exploration to selected vineyards elsewhere in the Cape. For this Pinot Noir, the maritime influence of Walker Bay and the distinctive sites of the Hemel-en-Aarde area provide a setting particularly well suited to the variety.

Richard works alongside oenologist Dudley Wilson, combining careful vineyard selection with restrained cellar handling. Individual parcels are assessed separately, and oak choices are tailored to the character of the fruit. Regular tasting throughout maturation guides the final blends, with an emphasis on balance, texture and a clear sense of origin.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir, clone PN777, from two Walker Bay parcels on Bokkeveld shale. Grapes were hand-picked on 17 and 18 February 2020, then sorted and destemmed.

Uncrushed berries entered small, open-topped fermenters for a three-day maceration before spontaneous fermentation. Gentle drain-and-return extraction was used, with total skin contact lasting 14–15 days. The remaining skins were basket-pressed.

Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel, followed by approximately ten to eleven months’ maturation in French oak, with 24% new wood. The wine was bottled without fining after light filtration. Production totalled 2,050 bottles.

Alcohol: 12.5%. Residual sugar: 2.3g/L. Total acidity: 6.3g/L. pH: 3.24. Recommended drinking window: 2024–2031.
