2020 Finis Terrae Red, Cousino Macul

Maipo Valley, Chile

Macul Velvet

Finis Terrae, which is Latin for “End of the Earth”, is a flagship red blend that embodies the essence of the Maipo Valley and the winemaking heritage of Cousiño Macul.

A polished Maipo Valley red with old-estate depth and a smooth, confident feel. Cassis, black cherry and ripe plum lead the nose, followed by tobacco, leather, red pepper, vanilla, cedar and a subtle savoury warmth. It has the structure you expect from Cabernet, but Merlot and Syrah bring softness, spice and a more rounded, generous shape.

On the palate, it is full, silky and nicely developed, with dark fruit, fine tannins and a long, savoury finish. The oak is present but settled, adding spice and polish rather than sweetness, while the acidity keeps the wine fresh enough for food. A strong choice for anyone who likes Bordeaux-style blends, but wants a riper, smoother Chilean expression with real Maipo pedigree.

Finis Terrae is one of Cousiño Macul’s flagship blends, created to show the depth and balance of Maipo Valley reds. It brings together the estate’s classic Cabernet Sauvignon character with Merlot’s softness and Syrah’s freshness and spice. The result is generous, structured and unmistakably Chilean, from one of the country’s most historic family wineries.

Cousiño Macul is one of Chile’s great historic wineries, founded in 1856 and still owned by the founding family. Based in the Maipo Valley, at the foot of the Andes near Santiago, the estate has played a central role in the development of Chilean fine wine, particularly through classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The family’s history is closely tied to the Macul estate, where French varieties were introduced in the 19th century and where the winery’s identity was shaped around structure, elegance and Maipo character. Today, the sixth and seventh generations continue that legacy, combining long family tradition with a modern approach to precision and consistency.

Finis Terrae is a key wine in that story. First released from the 1992 vintage, it was one of Chile’s early premium red blends and remains a benchmark for polished, Cabernet-led Maipo wine.

The 2020 Finis Terrae is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led red blend from the Maipo Valley, supported by Merlot and Syrah. Around 75% of the wine comes from old vineyards at the Macul estate, with the balance drawn from selected vineyards used for the Antiguas Reservas range at Buin and Macul.

The grapes were harvested into small 10kg boxes, then carefully selected in the cellar at both bunch and berry level. The selected berries were cold settled without oxygen at 7°C before fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation lasted 9 to 12 days, followed by 12 to 18 days of maceration and full malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged for 14 months in French oak barriques, with 55% new oak.

Now with several years in bottle, Finis Terrae is drinking in a smooth, generous and savoury place. Expect cassis, plum, tobacco, leather and cedar spice, with silky tannins and enough freshness to keep the finish long and balanced. Alcohol is 14.2%, and the wine has the depth for steak, lamb and slow-cooked dishes, but the texture is already polished and ready to enjoy.
