2020 Clos des Vignes Rouge, Cotes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel, Domaine Gardies

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Black cherry, blackberry and ripe fig lead the aroma, layered with cracked pepper, dried Mediterranean herbs and warm spice. A subtle balsamic character and touch of seasoned oak bring added depth, capturing the sunlit, rugged personality of the Roussillon without losing precision.

Rich and concentrated, with juicy dark fruit, supple tannins and a distinctive seam of mineral freshness. Grenache provides warmth and generosity, while old-vine Carignan adds savoury detail, acidity and structure. The finish is long, polished and gently spiced, making this a powerful southern French red with impressive balance and character.

For when: The grill is fired up, and dinner demands something properly Mediterranean.

Pairs with: Lamb with black olives, grilled ribeye, duck breast, wild boar ragù, aubergine stew or mature farmhouse cheese.

Clos des Vignes comes from old plots in the Génégals sector on the elevated clay-limestone soils of Vingrau. The 75-year-old vines produce naturally low yields, while the hot Mediterranean climate and drying Tramontane wind create concentrated, healthy fruit with freshness beneath the richness.

Domaine Gardiés is an historic family estate rooted in the rugged landscape of the Roussillon. Its origins stretch back to the eighteenth century, when the property was known as Mas Farine and belonged to the Castany family. It later took the Gardiés name following the marriage of Noëlle Castany and Henri Gardiés.

Jean Gardiés has directed the modern estate since 1990 and now works alongside his son, Victor. Together, they cultivate approximately 35 hectares divided between two contrasting areas. Vingrau and Tautavel offer elevated clay-limestone terraces beneath the Corbières, while Espira-de-l’Agly provides dark schist soils shaped by the wind and Mediterranean heat.

Chemical treatments were abandoned in 2004, and the estate’s vineyards are now certified organic. Old vines, low yields, hand harvesting and sensitive cellar work allow native varieties such as Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Grenache Gris to express the character of each site. Domaine Gardiés has earned a place among the Roussillon’s most respected producers by combining southern richness with freshness, precision and restraint. The result is a range of distinctive wines that feel deeply connected to their wild Catalan landscape.

The 2020 Clos des Vignes is a blend of 70% Grenache Noir and 30% Carignan. The fruit comes from approximately 75-year-old vines grown on elevated clay-limestone soils in the Génégals sector of Vingrau. Naturally low yields of around 25 hectolitres per hectare provide concentration and depth.

The grapes were harvested by hand and traditionally vinified in concrete tanks. Fermentation took place with wild yeasts, followed by a maceration lasting between 20 and 25 days. Light daily punching down gently extracted colour, flavour and fine tannins without making the wine feel heavy.

The wine matured for 12 months in 600-litre French oak barrels, allowing the fruit and mineral character to remain clear while adding texture and subtle spice.

Certified organic. Alcohol: 14%. Residual sugar: 0.9g/L. Sealed with cork. Contains sulphites. Not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.
